Powering a 36" roof mounted led light bar.
« on: August 14, 2020, 07:21:38 PM »
I'm installing a 36" led light bar on the roof. At 234 advertised watts that about 19.5 amps on the 12 volt system. Will it really draw that many amps? I'm wanting to wire it to the keyed accessory wire under the storage box. Thanks!

You better hope not. Your stator only have about 11-12 amps extra and that accessory circuit is fused with a 10 amp fuse as I recall. Relax..., LEDs don't use the amps you think or convert to. I found that if you use any of the watt-to-amp converters on the web, the actual amp draw is less then half of what the converter said. For example, my 24" light bar was to pull just over 9 amps but in reality it pulls just 4.6...and yes, it is on that accessory wire as well as about everything else I have extra.

Still, you may well pull 8 or 9 amps and that's too close to the limit on that wire but..you can use it to trigger a relay with a line from the battery for it's load. Your light may have come with that harness setup already.

Hey NMK, after I remove the tray under the hood to access the wiring is the accessory wire easily identified? What side of the chassis might be on left or right? Thanks!

The accessory plug is there on the passenger side dash. You can see the back of it when the tray is out. Just follow the wires coming off it. One is hot, the other a ground. I just used these...or some like then for my stuff.
