Particle Separator Plumbing
« on: June 27, 2019, 12:24:20 PM »
Hey guys, I’m looking to install a particle separator for my 1000 intake( bad dusty round here). I was thinking of installing a male adapter into the existing opening in between the seats and going thru the front of the rear bed and turning up to the separator. My question is do you think going with 2” from the stock intake opening to the separator will give it enough air or create a restriction ? Go with two 45’s instead of a 90 degree elbow? I’ve seen them installed with 3” piping and it appears to be overkill and bulky. Thoughts ? Thanks in advance !

2" is too small even for the 800s cause the intake port on the 800s airbox works out to 2.46". That's why I went with 2.5" off the box. You need a 3" and then use a quick silicone 90 to head to the separator. You can stub the 90 through the bed so it will pretty much lay tight against the bed. I have an old How To on one of my first setups that ported into the bed with a 3" and I think there's a video somewhere too.

Really you should consider replacing that entire tube with turbo fittings and pipe...and the pipe you can ovel if necessary. I think I have a How T on that too...lol
Here that one is:  http://cfmoto-forum.com/how-to's/z8-engine-air-intake-tube-change-out/

considering how choked down the stock intake tube is... you aren't going to do any worse to it with what you're describing

Thank for the great info ! You’ve given me some great choices. Taking your advice and cutting the intake tube down and running the 2.5” hard pipe. Still undecided on thru the bed or in the cab between the seats. But will definitely post some pics as I get going.

I got the separator installed, the kit came with a 3 1/2" 90 degree by rectangle that fit the stock intake tube perfectly. I measured and cut the stock housing and the lip of the new adapter snapped in to it like it was made to be there. I JB Welded it for cheap insurance. I hooked up my vacuum gauge on the drip tube of the air box after completed and checked it from a dead stop, then at wide open throttle and also just cruisin' down the road. From a dead stop to wide open I registered my biggest vacuum at less than an 1/4" which Im guessing is probably a stock number with the hair net on the un-modified tube. All in all I am very pleased and much more relieved the top end is WAY better protected than OEM design. I might move it up to the top 1 3/4 bar for a cleaner look, I did wire in a rocker to turn off the fan when stopped but its really not that noisy, especially with the stereo rockin' out the oldies  ;)

Neat. Yeah those stock tubes...at least on the 800s.. have some restriction at the head. When I was testing mine it also showed some but after I changed it out to the 2.5" it was gone.

If you wire it into the fuel pump it will only run when the engine is running that way its always on when you need it to be, you can't  forget.
Its all protected by  relays the unit draws very little load so no problems  there..
The connector on the top of the fuel tank is where you need to find the live feed and splice in there no need to be running wires all around the the place and up to the dash.
Also very neet and easy to get to.

The wiring harness supplied with the YXZ separator is perfect, if you fit the fuse carrier and relay behind the driver's seat the battery connections reach and do not need to be cut or extended.
The feed for the separator fan is more than long enough it can be clipped to the cage and the excess zip tied to the relay.
The feed wire to switch the relay in can be taken from the fuel pump just above the fuel tank and clipped to the chassis under the seats and plastic panels well out of harms way, no need to be running wire all around to the dash or fuse box.
Also I have seen people asking about the location of the fuse box, on the 2018 model 800EX its  just below the windscreen you need to remove the storage box and you will be able to get to it should you need to.
