I have looked all over the internet for one that will fit a uni filter UP 6229 ast and can't find it. If anyone has or knows the part # could you help me out.

Most of us have come to the realization that outerwears over oiled foam filters is a problem in that the oil/treatment saturates the mesh causing even the finest dust...the dust that would normally pass through to the filter.. to cake over the surface of the prefilter. That causes the already 30% restriction to elevate to over 80+% air restriction very quickly which leads to air starvation and a rich operating condition...which in turn washes the oil from the cylinder walls and rapidly wears the rings. So...rapping an oiled foam or even an oiled gauze filter with one of these isn't a good idea. Better to use one well away from the filter such as at the box's air intake.
Below is a typical plugged outwears and a still pretty clean filter. And the more blocked it gets, the more it is sucked-down onto the oiled filter and the more wet it becomes..trapping even more dust. Much of the crust/cake has been knocked-off on this one during it's removal but you can still see a patch of it left.

Thank you very much NMK.I guess a prefilter isn't a good idea.
I want to keep as much dust out of the motor as possible.

Its a good idea...just needs to be away from the oiled filter. And a larger filter is also never a bad idea.
