Because it does it when the starter is engaged and at shut-down just before it stops rotating...when it kicks-back, it is my belief that the one-way sprag or overriding clutch on the starter drive is slipping or may even be coming apart. Not uncommon with some of CFM's sprag parts to have these kind of issues.
This is the part I refer to.

Definately sounds like the sprag clutch.

When it stops and kicks-back, both the overriding clutch and the starter motor do turn a bit so I have to adjust my thinking to...either. Pull the motor first and test it. It may just be full of rust or mud..or just very dry.

I think purchasing a starter motor is wishful thinking  :) as mentioned pull it & check it's condition......my money is it's good.

The starter is not engaged or connected when you turn it off, if the sprag is working correctly.

Yeah but engines stop on a compression stroke and turn slightly backwards when they releave and bump against the sprag turning the starter backwards a bit. Most often we don't hear it but there are times when we do. Older Kawasaki V-twins are known to break teeth off their larger drive gear because of this kick-back effect.

Did not know or even think that  :) makes perfect sense! It would be sweet for the OP if that's all it is. The poor thing is wounded & suffering badly what ever it is  ;D

Yeah it would be nice if we knew exactly what was found. I would have already had the starter off and apart..or at least tested. I just watched a video on a aircraft Rotax engine that said when the sprag gets hit by kickback under power a couple of times, it is damaged enough that it may not engage with the starter and has to be replaced. That happens when it comes up on the power stroke too slow for the rotational mass to carry it through TDC and the plug fires that 5-12 degrees advanced of TDC and it just kicks backwards hard against the sprag with that fuel charge burning. A bit more then the little bit it gets when stopping. To me it just says there is some real benefit to a starter with a bendix drive... and a flywheel...lol

Interesting comments NMK

I had a look @ the canned ham V800, you know the one they cloned from CFMOTO  :D The use a sprag for the starter gear as well  :) funny thing huh!

Don't recall ever hearing about a failure in this area with canned ham, one thing they do that CFMOTO does not. They remove timing @ lower rpm, the reason was to dramatically reduce the lung & lurch take off......acceleration. The reason was to keep the passenger from being discharge off the rear @ engagement & inital acceleration. When you drive a canned ham you notice increased acceleration thru the power band were as others hit hard & gradually roll off.

Maybe another reason was to reduce the backwards kick as you have mentioned?

May be. I wonder if the back-spin ever locks the other sprag..Haven't ever felt it. Anyway, a vid or two for some time-killer:

I'm not sure that I would consider kick back a normal running condition. I can see certain conditions such as lack of flywheel weight & mass being a factor, even how some stator's have huge magnetic pulses when you try & turn a motor over by hand.

Video 1 show what happens to the sprag after a few of those kickbacks & then the trouble starting afterwards.

Hopefully the OP will keep us updated so we can understand the solution to the poor wounded ATV  :)

I talked to my uncle that rewinds and builds electric motors, he said it sounds like the bearings are slipping.
