Leaking Coolant
« on: August 16, 2018, 02:24:32 PM »
Hi All,

So my 2017 cforce 500 HO has started leaking coolant out of the little tube down by the pump.  I've seen people post about this and mention a seal that can be replaced to solve this.  Can anyone point me in the direction of a part number?  I'll try to get some good pictures when I replace this and put it in the How to section.

Side note, when I filled it back up the leak slowed down. Kinda weird but I'm thinking it may be just better quality coolant than the factory stuff?

Thanks,
Erik

Just look it up on Alpha-Sports.com. As I recall the 500s also have a complete replaceable unit that is so easy to replace. Probably can get just the seal but..those seals go for a reason..and one was untrue shafts and/or bearing movement.

This is the exploded view.

I have about 600 miles on it.

Should I just order all the internals?  2-8?  It's about $100 for all that.  Maybe I should reach out to CFMoto... I'm only about 6 months out of warranty at this point.

Talk with CFM first. They may take care of it. If not at least get #s 4 & 5.  I guess I saw this unit and was thinking how nice it would be if the 800s had this.

The older 500 and 600 have the easy pump. 5 must be the oil seal. 4 is the mechanical seal. There has to be a ceramic disk that sits in the backside of the impeller.not sure if it is with the seal of on the  impeller.
Unfortunately the mechanical seal is most likely pressed into the engine cover. This will be work.

You'll also need the gasket for the magneto side case cover.

Pay attention to the snap ring orientation, only one side is designed to take the load (more sharp edge/face of the snap ring goes toward the engine)

Thanks for all the advice everyone!  My machine has been sitting since Sunday night, and not a drop under it.  At this point, I'm going to change the coolant out with some good quality stuff and take a wait and see approach.  It's really the strangest thing, but when I topped off the rad and overflow last Sat it quit leaking.  That makes me think maybe the coolant from the factory was the issue.  (I know this is probably wishful thinking)

In any case, I'm going to call CFmoto USA and see what they think.

Not so strange..mine was leaking slightly when I picked it up and for the first 100 miles or so. When I missed topping-off the recovery tank once and it pulled air into the radiator I topped it off with some green Peak I had then refilled the tank. It stopped leaking right there and then. So I changed all of it out to the Peak because in those days they were getting reports of coolant jelling. 1100 miles now and still not a drop.

This is reason I asked the mileage, I wouldn't expect it has self healed....never know  :)

I'm really curious of the manufacturer response to your inquiry & request, please update the thread good or bad.

I just received a response from CFmoto... Kind of.

"Good afternoon Erik,

Thank you for contacting CFMOTO.  Due to liability concerns, CFMOTO-USA cannot provide technical diagnosis of our vehicles to consumers. There is no technical support department for consumers. Your best course of action is to contact your authorized CFMOTO dealer. They are the first line in answering technical questions.

Best Regards,"

Well they are correct working thru the dealer network, so now it's your relationship with the dealer. If that's good, then it's the between the dealer & the manufacturer. A good dealer that treats the owner & manufacturer fairly would have a good case for a goodwill claim.

Called my dealer today about this.  The first question he asked was "was it sitting for a while"  It had been sitting for a couple months so I told him yes.  Then he asked if it quit leaking after I rode it for a while.  Again my answer was "yes".  according to him, the seal will shrink a bit if the machine sits for a while.  then when you warm it all up again it reseals.

Does this sound plausible?  Either way, they knew exactly what I was talking about.  Guessing this has happened on quite a few cforces.

Lol..I don't think ceramic and carbon-graphite or Phenolic Plastic expands or shrinks much. But fluid can pass between the two surfaces when those surfaces are pitted, damaged, ground wrong or there is foreign material between them...like jelling coolant or any type of particle. The rubber parts if leaking wouldn't stop. Yours may yet wear-in and stop but if it starts doing it more often, then it's failing and needs replaced.
