CFMoto ZForce 800 Overheating & Radiator Fan Troubleshooting Guide

This guide is a starting point for diagnosing overheating, radiator-fan and cooling-system problems on the CFMoto ZForce 800, 800EX and 53" Trail.

Common symptoms include:

  • Temperature gauge climbing higher than normal
  • Radiator fan not coming on
  • Fan runs but temperature continues rising
  • Coolant pushing into or overflowing the recovery bottle
  • Machine runs hot during slow trail riding or idling
  • Temperature improves once vehicle speed increases

If the machine is actively overheating, stop riding and allow it to cool before continuing diagnosis.



1. RADIATOR FAN DOES NOT COME ON

A failed radiator thermoswitch / fan switch has been reported repeatedly by ZForce 800 owners.

Start by checking:

  • Radiator fan fuse
  • Fan relay
  • Radiator thermoswitch / temperature switch
  • Fan wiring and electrical connectors
  • Fan motor itself

The radiator thermoswitch is located on the radiator and uses a two-wire connector.

If the temperature rises but the fan never activates, the thermoswitch is one of the first components worth testing.

2. TESTING THE FAN CIRCUIT

Several members have diagnosed the fan circuit by disconnecting the two-wire radiator thermoswitch connector and temporarily connecting the two wires together.

If the fan runs with the connector jumped, that points toward the thermoswitch as the likely problem.

If the fan still does not run with the switch connector jumped, inspect:

  • Fan fuse
  • Fan relay
  • Fan motor
  • Wiring between the relay, fan and switch
  • Electrical grounds and connectors

Important: Jumping the connector is useful as a diagnostic procedure or temporary emergency measure. The cooling system should ultimately be repaired so the fan operates automatically.

A manual fan override can be useful as a backup, but it should not replace a functioning automatic fan-control system.



3. FAN RUNS BUT ENGINE STILL GETS HOT

If the radiator fan is operating but the temperature remains high, look beyond the fan circuit.

Check:

  • Radiator coolant level
  • Coolant recovery-bottle level
  • Air trapped in the cooling system
  • Thermostat operation
  • Coolant circulation
  • Radiator blockage or contamination
  • Radiator-fin damage
  • Water-pump operation
  • Coolant leaks

Do not assume the recovery bottle represents the actual coolant level in the radiator.

Only when the engine is completely cold, remove the radiator cap and verify that the radiator itself is full.



4. NORMAL TEMPERATURE VS. OVERHEATING

Owners in the forum commonly report normal operation around three temperature bars, with the fan cycling on as temperature rises and bringing the temperature back down.

A brief increase above that can occur depending on operating conditions, but the temperature should not continue climbing toward the top of the gauge.

If the fan is running continuously and the temperature remains significantly elevated, investigate the cooling system rather than assuming it is normal.

5. TEMPERATURE RISES AT LOW SPEED BUT DROPS WHILE MOVING

If the machine overheats during slow trail riding or idling but cools once vehicle speed increases, airflow through the radiator may be masking a fan-system problem.

Check whether the radiator fan is actually operating when the machine gets hot.

Possible causes include:

  • Failed radiator thermoswitch
  • Fan relay problem
  • Weak or failed fan motor
  • Dirty or restricted radiator
  • Low coolant
  • Air trapped in the cooling system
  • Thermostat or coolant-circulation problem

If the temperature drops quickly as road speed increases while the fan does not operate, start with the fan circuit.



6. RADIATOR CLEANING & AIRFLOW

Mud, grass, seeds and debris can greatly reduce airflow through the radiator.

Inspect both sides of the radiator carefully.

When cleaning:

  • Remove packed mud and debris
  • Clean from the back side when practical
  • Avoid damaging or flattening radiator fins
  • Verify that aftermarket accessories are not restricting airflow

Be cautious with high-pressure washing directly against radiator fins, since bent fins can reduce airflow.



7. COOLANT LEVEL & AIR IN THE SYSTEM

If the cooling system has recently been drained, repaired or allowed to run low, trapped air can cause abnormal temperature behavior.

With the engine completely cold:

  • Verify the radiator is full
  • Verify the recovery bottle is at the proper level
  • Inspect for visible leaks
  • Check hoses and clamps
  • Verify coolant circulation as the engine warms

A machine can have coolant visible in the recovery bottle while the radiator itself is still low.



8. THERMOSTAT & COOLANT CIRCULATION

If the fan works and the radiator is full but the engine still overheats, investigate coolant circulation.

Possible causes include:

  • Thermostat not opening correctly
  • Air trapped near the thermostat
  • Restricted radiator or coolant passage
  • Water-pump problem

One useful clue is whether coolant begins circulating through the radiator as the engine reaches operating temperature.

If the engine temperature rises rapidly but radiator circulation remains poor, thermostat or circulation problems should be investigated.



9. FAN DIRECTION

The radiator fan should move air through the radiator in the same general direction as natural airflow while the vehicle is moving forward.

If the fan has been replaced, rewired or modified, verify it is turning in the correct direction.

10. BEFORE POSTING AN OVERHEATING QUESTION

Include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Model year
  • Exact model: 800, 800EX, 53" Trail, EPS, etc.
  • Mileage and operating hours
  • How many temperature bars are displayed
  • Whether the radiator fan turns on
  • Whether the fan stays running
  • Whether the temperature drops once vehicle speed increases
  • Radiator coolant level when completely cold
  • Recovery-bottle coolant level
  • Any recent coolant-system repairs
  • Any visible coolant leaks
  • Whether the radiator is clean
  • Any parts already replaced or tested

These details can quickly distinguish a fan-control problem from a coolant-circulation or airflow problem.
