Hello,
I have recently purchased a CFMOTO 450L ATV in Romania. This is my first ATV ever.
I will not start by describing the 450L capabilities, because I have already big problems with the gearbox. The ATV has only 50km so far.

The thing is that even after the very first kilometers I've noticed the gear selector works very hard/or doesnt' work at all when the ATV is positioned (stopped), facing uphill or downhill .

When the ATV was on a straight surface the gear changing worked much better.. at that time.

On some occasions I found the ATV impossible to turn because of this problem and had to go forward instead of moving into reverse...really,really annoying !

When i bought the ATV from the dealer it was also difficult to shift, however the dealer said this was happening because of the way the gearbox is made...

I thought the gearbox will work better after running some shine , however after another 20-30km now it goes really really hard in Reverse and not at all in Parking mode. It is impossible to shift it in Parking mode no matter what I do.

The gearbox shifts with no problem from N-L-H and backwards, very difficult in R and not at all in P.

I have contacted the dealer (Authentic Spirit - Bucharest) and now I have to tow my ATV to the service on my own expense, costing me 200euro...

Has anyone encountered the same problem with this ATV's gearbox or with any other CFMOTO ATV? Is there any way I can fix this by myself or is the gearbox defective?

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of your problems with the transmission. Seems most CFMotos have some hard shifting issues but most get better with time and some "Shine" on the parts. Some don't however. Let me ask, does it shift into R and P better when the engine is OFF (not running)? If so this is an indicator that there is some pressure being applied to the transmission through the CVT system as in a dragging wet clutch or belt that's too tight.

No, there is no difference, even when the engine is OFF.

Currently, it shifts into R very hard and it doesn't shift at all in P. I cannot put in Parking no matter how hard I try.

Does this mean it is already broken?!  :'(

It just means it has a bent shifter fork or a shift drum problem. Probably had it from the start. It needs to go in and they need to pay for your expenses to get it there.(IMO)..at least part of it as it was like this from the start...and they knew it.

I might be wrong but I think this model has an interlock on the shifter. Might not be moving out of the way fully. It doesn't have a wet clutch so the only thing that might be turning the gear box making it hard to shift would be the one way bearing in the primary clutch. If you "humped" on it a little and it would shift than I would say check there. You did say running or not so I would look somewhere else to start.

from one of there sites

Unlike others, CF450 takes use of anti-theft shift lock instead of steerling lock which is very convenient.

Hello Kaz..
I have one CF 450L 2 months now. In the first 100 Km i found the same problem. After i discover that if i push a litle the throtle control...then the gear changing works again easy and perfect. When i wanted to put R (reverse) or P (parking) just i push a little the throtle control (all this with the brakes down)
And yes Cosmodan you have right. The anti-theft is on the shifter in CF 450L ;)

If you have to tap the throttle, than I would guess the one way bearing down in the primary clutch is draging causing things to still move. This is a problem with the CanAm atvs and you can read up on it to see how they fixed it. I own a outlander and you do have to tap the throttle or "hump" it sometimes to get it in gear. I have yet to fix it. Lazy I think.

Could be adjustment from the foot brake cable not tight enough to allow the shifter to move. This happens to mine if cable is not adjusted correctly or I do not push foot brake hard enough.

This is a common problem on the 400,450, 550, check the pedal brake cabe is ok and working as told before, take out the shifter cover and lubricate the moving part of the shifter section, Make shure the shifter is not touching the fron plastic fender on the with the lover shaft part. Shift many times so get weel lubricated. The other problem is the springs and dents wheels inside the gearbox of the shifter. It will get better in time and with more KM, but for now you have to hardly step on the brake pedal to shift into revers and park. If this dosen't improve by 200-500 KM, make your dealer check it.

Best regards

There is a safety lock that may need to be adjusted. Read the posts in this category and there should be pictures of it. Another member my chime in on this too.
