Hi,

Yesterday I went to put my 400 in 4wd but it did not work. On the dash you can see the picture of the four wheels with the two rear lit up. When I swap to 4wd that picture just goes away. I checked the relays and swapped them around to test them out. The middle relay clicks when I move the switch so I'm guessing the switch is good. The relays seem to be good. There are three identical relays (high beams, 4wd 1 and 4wd 2) and I swapped them all around in different configurations with the same results.

Is the problem likely the actuator then? I've not been able to find confirmation that a bad actuator would make the display of the four wheels on the dash disappear?

Thanks

Got me on that one. A disappearing display usually isn't from an actuator or gear problem. More of an electrical issue like a circuit board or connection issue.Could water have gotten in somewhere it shouldn't?

Thanks for the reply

I don't think water would have gotten in anywhere. It has very low miles, doesn't get many rough rides (usually very tame trails) and is stored inside. I do wash real good after each ride but that shouldn't cause water to get into anywhere it shouldn't.

I'm pretty stumped on it, also. Not seeing anyone else having the same issue online or anything. I don't want to start replacing parts that aren't needed to be replaced.

Also while troubleshooting I did remove the two bolts holding the actuator onto the diff and noted that the actuator was sealed onto the diff really good. I was not able to pull it off by hand and did not use any tools to try to remove it, i just put the bolts back on. in my mind, that was enough to prove that no water had snuck in behind the actuator or anything like that.

As I recall there are four bolts on a CFM actuator so...and that wouldn't cause any problems.

Thanks, mine only had 2 bolts like this:

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any more info and haven't been able to troubleshoot any further but hopefully this weekend I can get some time out there and look at it more. Appreciate the reply.

Not yet, I didn't have a chance over the weekend to investigate.

Any news?

Sorry, I have been out of action due to a burst appendix. Better now, so will hopefully be digging into this soon before our 4th of July ATV trip.

A burst appendix is no fun. Been there, done that.

Ok, still haven't found the issue but I did some trouble shooting.

When you hit the switch to 4wd you can hear/feel the relay clicking in the "under hood" fuse block. I did try again to swap the relays around (high beam relay is the same as the two 4WD relays) but no change. High beams work with any of the three relays so guessing the relays are good.

I pulled off the actuator on the front diff and had my son switch to 4WD mode while I watched it. I didn't observe any movement in the actuator at all. The actuator is way different from the one in the picture int his thread. It looked like just a spring.

Inside the diff there was a "pin" that looks like the actuator would move in and out of the diff to enable the 4wd I guess? I could move it a little bit but not push it all the way in or anything. Not sure if it is supposed to be pushed all the way in either?

Anyways, with the actuator unhooked, when I swap to 4WD mode the dash display blinks all 4 wheels like it's trying to shift to 4WD but obviously can't.

When I put the actuator back on, and swap to 4WD, the display of the wheels on the dash just goes away again.

Very odd. I've been unable to find any YT videos or anything on this 2nd gen 400 4WD set up.

Anyone have or know where I can get a service manual or anything like that?

Thanks

Thanks, I checked it out but it wasn't much help in this case.

Anyway, I unplugged the actuator and the display will flash like it's attempting to shift. When plugged in, the display just goes away.

My guess is the actuator died.

Does anyone know of 3rd party actuators are any good? Having a hard time finding a cfmoto official one.

Thanks

Odd...I went to Alpha-Sports and found it right a way..just like the service manual on the CFMoto site. It is 283 bucks though. Did you find a third-party actuator?

Yes I was looking on eBay and could only find 3rd party ones, usually direct from China. I'll try googling alpha sports and see what I can find. Thanks
