Hi all!

After much sitting on the fence, I've finally ordered an S&B particle separator (Separador de partículas).

There's a few different variations of particle separators, V1 and V2, and they all come with vehicle specific mounting kits (pipes, clamps, etc).

Key points are:
1) 1.75" (45mm) roll bar mount.
2) Right hand air exit.
3) Kit tube sizing for connection to air-filter.

I plan on mounting it below the roof, on the bottom 'X' part of the roll cage, for shorter pipe runs and so it doesn't obstruct the rear-view mirror visibility.

Some of the S&B kits come with different piping options, all the V1 filters have a 76-2xxx part number, all the V2 filters, with two fans and a fan speed controller that hooks into the vehicle wiring, have a 76-7xxx part number.

Differences can be seen in this video:

The kit that looks the most compatible with the ZForce 950/1000 Sport is the one for the Polaris General, which is a V1 kit.

https://sbfilters.com/pages/76-2009install

Note the part 'H' the coupler, is marked as "2.5 coupler" this is a mistake, it's actually 1.5", which I confirmed using the parts diagrams and listings for the Polaris General, seen here:

https://www.northwestmotorcycles.com.au/partFinder/fiche/polaris/2020/polaris-general-1000-xp-4p-rc-r03/engine-air-intake-system
(Part 21 is 7081979 CLAMP-HOSE T-BOLT 66.4 DIA)

Also note S&B part 'T' is a 1.75" bracket, no typo, confirmed here: https://www.everythingpolarisranger.com/epr-blog/how-to-find-your-polaris-ranger-roll-bar-size

I plan to cut a hole in the top of the rear plastic behind the passenger seat and route the flexible tube though it, then cut-up or discard part 'E' from above, then use part 'F' to connect to the existing airbox, which may also need to be cut and use as many pipe clamps and joiners from the kit.

I did consider going with a V2, but couldn't find an S&B kit that has all the right pipes.  Once I fit it I'll probably feed back to S&B tech support so they can make an official kit!

I did consider the official CF-Moto separator, but I it won't fit as I have a luggage box where that goes, and it also looks dog-ugly...

When it arrives, I'll take some pics of the installation.

Thanks also to the other forum member for the photo of the Z-Force with the luggage rack removed, it's a super helpful photo!

It finally arrived, started fitting yesterday, all going well so far, can confirm it definitely fits.  Only issues were the roll bar clamps are too big and need spacing.  If you're ordering you need the clamps with the 1.5" ID from the 76-2012 Yamaha kit. Part number: AL1795-01 as the ones that come in the 76-2009 kit, have these weird plastic inserts as the roll bar of the polaris commander isn't actually a round tube shape and it's not clear in the exploded diagrams.

Yamaha: https://sbfilters.com/pages/76-2012install
Polaris: https://sbfilters.com/pages/76-2009install

I attached two images, one showing the parts used from the 76-2009 kit that I used, with 2 clamps that can be used if you make your own inserts (I used 81x3cm strip of 3mm rubber wrapped round the roll bar).  One showing the parts from the Yamaha kit that would probably be a better fit.

ok, I'll try and document the installation process.

  • remove metal luggage rack, a bunch of long hex head screws, 4 x 10mm head screws on the mudguards.
  • remove air filter covers, 3 hex screws on each side.
  • remove bolt holding left and right air filter pipes.
  • remove plastic rear bed panel, 3 silver bolts on the air filter, 2 hex above the air filter, a 10mm nut and bolt either side under the mudguards, 2 bolts on the upright facing roll bar, loads of plastic clips - make sure you have a removal tool to make it quicker and easier.
  • pull the plastic rear bed panel forwards, side the tail light connectors forwards to pull them off the chassis brackets, then undo each tail light connector.
  • fully remove plastic rear bed panel and set aside, be careful not to scratch the tail lights, put it on a rug or something.
  • remove the existing air filter pipe at the pipe coupler, but leave the coupler in-place.
  • fit the particle filter to the rear roll cage, ensure the dust exit points downwards a little, not upwards, so that dust/water/mud doesn't collect in it.
  • cut the two supplied pipes, use the supplied pipe couple to joinn the two cut pipes.
  • temporarily reinstall the plastic rear bed panel and insert two plastic clips behind the right hand seat, no need to push them all the way in.
  • use the supplied hole saw and arbor to drill a hole for the pipe behind the right hand seat, if you look under the plastic you'll see two re-inforcement ribs, the hole needs to be more or less between the two reinforcement ribs, my hole ended up just a little towards the center of the vehicle.  the hole will go though two panels.
  • use a saw to cut off a bit more plastic of the plastic rear bed panel so that when the pipe is in place the panel can be inserted around it.
  • since I installed a CVT blower fan + switch, a fan override switch and switch for the particle separator at the the same time as the particle separator, I didn't use the supplied relay and fuse harness; instead I cut the long 2 wires from the supplied harness and routed them under the chassis following the path of the existing wiring harness and made the wires come out up from the bottom of the vehicle under the cup-holders behind the switch panel and wired the black one to ground and the other to a fused 12V relay output from a new relay box I also installed.  refer to the wiring diagram of the vehicle when making electrical connections.
  • cut about 6" / 15cm from the flexible tubing, loosely install the supplied pipe couples to the particle separator, flex tube and air-filter pipe.
  • verify particle separator operation.
  • put everything back together and make final adjustments to flex tube.

See attached photos, also there's more photos of the installation in this shared album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/61erfH89Yagbrd1S9

Great. Now for the testing :)

I went to Morocco at the end of October, and the particle separator worked great!  On one day I was driving through a dust and sand storm with about 50m visibility and I checked the air-filter the next day and I couldn't bang any dust out of the filter like I usual can after using the buggy in dusty conditions.  It remained clean for the entire week of holiday where the buggy was used every day in sand dunes and dusty trails with a group of other quad bikes and buggies that were also kicking up dust; the separator definitely had it's work cut out for it and worked excellently.

I did however forget to turn it on a couple of times, the new feature of the V2 separators has a throttle sensor, which bumps up the fan speed of the separator only when the throttle is used.  This is definitely a useful feature as the separator is, how shall we say, not quiet, when the engine is off...

I'm wondering about making a device that hooks into the CAN bus, listens for throttle signal packets and controls the fan speed.  Might investigate that at some point, I have the PCB design, manufacturing and embedded development skills to make it happen...  Would be useful for the inline blower on the VTX intake too...
