Engine Junk Burning Oil 950
« on: December 03, 2021, 01:48:08 PM »
Ok so I thought I would combine both the other topics.  I heard from the dealer today who said CF Moto refuses to warranty the engine. I took it in for the lack of vent hose on the evap and burning oil.  Apparently water ingestion has caused the issues (burning oil) which we knew from the lack of vent house on the evap canister.  After he told me this, of course, I was pissed.  They even inspected and took pictures of the evap canister to show it was filled with mud and water.   They tried to make the case that everything else in the machine: diffs, tranny, air intake, cvt are perfectly clean, showing the machine has never been in high water (which it hasn’t), but cf moto doesn’t want to hear it.  They even sent pictures.  This isn’t the company I thought I was buying from.  They have a known issue with the evap and 5 mins on fb would show that.  Very disappointed with the company.  My dealer said they are going to call them back to attempt to convince them it’s their fault which it is.  Right now I have a year old machine that was ruined because of poor assembly.   I’ll keep everyone posted.

If I were you I would either call CFMoto USA directly...or have my attorney send them a letter of demand outlining the issue and requirements for resolution..ie a new, complete engine. I would do it soon while the iron is hot. You may find the dealer hasn't been up front with them or you. It happens.

So I called cf Moto who basically gave me the run around and told me to have the dealer to submit more pictures.  I also just heard back from the dealer who said they have not heard back and have called multiple times.

I think the lawyer may be a good idea.  But honestly I’ve never hired a lawyer for anything.  I’ll have to call around on Monday.  This is nuts.

I called the dealer, Roys RV, who said they had been in contact with cf moto.  Cf moto requested they send more pictures  of the intake, filter, and air intake.  I’m hoping that means they are going to help me out in some way.     He said to call back Friday.

Honestly if it were anything else I’d probably eat the cost myself. But I really think given the circumstances they should help.

I suspect CF moto is trying to play hardball as this could leave a door open.

Every manufacturer sets aside money for warranty claims.  They should pay the claim.   Just keep pushing and they will pay all or a significant part

Hey all just thought I’d provide an update on this. cf moto wanted more pictures a while back.  The dealer is short staffed so they just got around to pulling the intake today.  They sent in all the pictures this morning so we’ll have to see what cf moto says.  Crossing my fingers they’ll make it right.  Will let ya know in the next couple days.

Talk about slow dealer repair.

No kidding!  I guess my forced New Years resolution is patience.

Don’t forget all z950 owners need to look for the evap hose!  Evap is located on driver side under the center kick panel.  Take out the seat the. Locate the panel in the center.  Should have a vent hose on the bottom of the canister.  Or, I suppose, you could take the skid off.

Beginning to sound like all these evap systems need to be.. deleted. Not sure they have any business on an off road machine..especially ones that get "chest-deep" in water and mud.  :o   If crap can get into it...and an EGR system can pull that crap into the engine...well that's just pure Fk'n stupid.

This is probably the best advice.   Basically, all you have to do is take it off and run a vent hose off the top of your gas tank.  I was going to run mine to the intake for the cvt. Don’t forget to also plug the inlet on the bottom of the intake between the throttle bodies.

Also there are no electronics to set a check engine light.

Well the day has finally came that cfmoto has said no they would not stand behind their product and mistake!   I’m pretty disappointed in them and my machine.

I have basically 2 choices.  First I could put it back together and trade it in on another machine.  OR I can put a motor in it.

I really thought hard about trading it on another machine (different brand of course), but I can’t do that.  I would hate for someone to get this machine and be all excited just to find out it’s burning oil.

So it looks like a new motor.   The dealer is giving me a great deal at their cost as they even believe I’m getting the shaft.  I had called some places for a rebuild but everyone wanted more money than a new oem msrp.  Even Nflow here on the site wanted $4k!  Msrp is $3200.

I guess I could have sold it with the disclosure of the engine problems but I doubt I could have gotten that much.

At least there is finally a plan to get this thing back out.

Definitely sucks..very disappointing. Bad design for sure. Guess we can also blame our own EPA for requiring such a thing on these machines in the first place. I see others are required to have one too but theirs look like there are things in place that prevent ingestion of that kind of stuff...extra check valves, plumbing and such. Maybe two minutes more thought.. and two-three more bucks in equipment could have prevented the problems.

Just a thought...how much damage to the environment would the few wisps of gas fumes do -V- all the pollution that happens by the manufacturing of all the repair/replacement parts or complete engines caused by one of these systems....in China..where there are virtually no pollution guidelines. Common sense seems to be on vacation these days. JMO

That’s a good point.  I know mines getting deleted and a good old fashion vet hose will be ran!

I’m upset as I am, I am excited to get it back.  The engine is on back order (like everything else in this world right now). He’s supposed to call me back in the next couple days with an eta.  I know it adds some time but I think having them replace it is the right call and only a couple more bucks.  This way if something is messed up then they’ll be held accountable.

What year is the machine, and how many miles on it?

Look at the bright side;  You'll have lots of spare parts! (assuming the dealer doesn't keep the old motor)

It’s a 2021 with 1200 miles.  I did call cf moto this morning and an engine shipment came in. They said the dealer should have it no later than mid February.
