I always thought it catches the big stuff before it gets pulled into the oil pump's intake. Mine does not have that kind of access so it's never been cleaned. Looking at the manual for the 1000s, I see it takes a special "flat surface" gasket adhesive..looks like just around the screen end itself. That's odd. Be careful with those soft,cheap Chinese bolts. They twist off very easily.

Drained the oil to see if the oil leak could be fixed.  Looks like a bad machine job on the motor itself.  Kinda hard to see in the picture.  The plate was flat.  I think a little silicone will seal it up. 

Also the battery is a Yausa V1X30L

Yeah a spot of High Temp RTV should do the trick.
