One is hot one is ground.

One will be reference voltage, and one will be signal voltage for ECU.

A third wire would be resistance to ground for the meter. Lack of ground on this line is the problem as his diagnostic efforts has demonstrated.

My gauge is functioning again with the original temperature sensor installed. I loosened the thermostat housing bolts one at a time and retightened them. Checked continuity it was there all the way down the engine from the sensor housing. Maybe the bolts are my path to ground from the housing through to the cylinder head and down the engine to ground. I guess  turning them removed some corrosion  buildup?? Anyway it’s working for now...

Excellent! The next time this happens, just take it all apart, clean all the surfaces, and reinstall.

It couldn't hurt to install ground washers on the bolt heads  (they have little teeth that dig into the metal) if the problem is persistent.

My gauge stayed on 1 bar again, checked continuity as before and it was gone again where the thermostat / sensor housing bolts down to the cylinder head. At this point I decided not to take things apart again. I took a 1/8” aluminum rivet and bent the nail part and flattened to a wedge shape. I wedged that nail between the thermost housing and the adjacent bolt and it restored continuity. The engine was still warm and the gauge bumped to two bars. This is my final fix, if the nail pops out from heat and cooling, I’ll make another one and insert it. I may somehow glue it the next time.

Yeah NMK I've tried to post pics, compressed them as I have before but the error message comes up. I'm running the original sensor, so it not a hardware electrical issue. I just can't keep continuity for the sensor to ground itself on the engine due to a break in the ground path from the mating of the thermostat housing to cylinder head. Yes. Now there are mostly two reasons why someone can't post or upload photos. One is that they are too large...but the other is that the user has used up all the allotted space they have for attachments..see it's like a email mailbox. Once it's full, you cant receive any more until some space is opened-up...by deleting some old attachments. Yes, that will delete them from the posts they were in but at least they will be old posts. That's why we recommend having a hosting service like Imgur.  If you want, email the pics to me and I'll upload them to the forum's Imgur account and post them for you.  Send them to: NMKawierider1@comcast.net   and yeah I took a look at your attachments and although I can't open them, they are taking up lots of room...and there are two pages of them. Probably go in and delete the oldest ones.

Pretty sure just an o ring, Truthfully I didnt totally disassemble the thermostat housing and separate from the engine. I just loosned the bolts all the way and slid the scotch brite pad between the mating surfaces and cleaned things best I could, it worked, so I thought all was good. I may totally disassemble things next winter, but no plans this riding season.
