Gates belt
« on: June 16, 2025, 01:20:11 PM »
I replaced the belt on my 600 touring with a gates belt 40G3569 G Force belt. Now my secondary is spinning all the time. I put the old belt back on and the secondary is working normal? The spacers are in the correct place and I don`t have a one way bearing, I replaced it last year with a normal bearing. So i`m thinking this is a belt issue, do I need to get a factory belt ? What belts are others using? thanks

The only thing that comes to mind is hat the Gates belt is a hair wider then the factory belt and is making contact on the primary's sheaves at idle. Check and see as it only takes a few thousands. The other thing that can cause it is it flat being too tight. Are you sure this is the correct number for your machine?

I looked it up again today and that's the part number that listed for a 2019 600 touring. I measured the new belt and it is wider than the old one, my caliper battery died so I can`t give any specs right now. there is a plastic washer and metal washer on the primary, the manual says the adjusting spacer spec is 4-5 mm thick . mine is just under 4mm but I can`t tell if i`m supposed to measure both together or just the plastics one. Both together are 5mm.

Do I need to let it run awhile to see if the secondary stops spinning  ? I`ve only run it a few minutes. It`s not going into drive because it is spinning to fast.

You need to see if there is any gap between the belt edge and the primary sheave. If not, then you need a thicker shim. If there is a gap..and it needs to me at least .3-5mm, then is this belt tighter then the other...but you already said it was wider so...that's likely the issue and having a warn shim is likely the problem. Replace the shims..would be my first recommendation.. but Gates wouldn't be my first choice for a belt. It would be the ultrimax...or the OE but that's too expensive...IMO.

Update on the Gates belt. I contacted EPI and they said that Gates belt were junk and they recommended their belt. Well I got one from them and everything is working normal again. The Gates belt cost half of the cost of the EPI belt. I guess you get what you pay for when trying to save a dollar.

Yeah in the Brute Force world a Gates belt may not get you out of the driveway, A Dayco will give you less then 100 miles many times, an Ultramax will give you about 4,000 miles, an EPI about 7,000 miles with the right rider and maintenance and the OE or Teryx 10,000 and more with the right operator and maintenance.
