Decided to take a gamble at Pisgah yesterday. It's a very nice park but with limited access for OHRV activities. This park is restricted to 50" machines and has one gate which is pretty tight.
The parking/staging area off of Rt 119 in Chesterfield is limited in size, with some unofficial overflow parking along the other side of the highway.
The trail itself leads first to the reservoir with a nice view; and easy ride of maybe a mile with some of the trail being paved. The entire trail system is in the woods.
Beyond the dam is where the ride gets interesting. There was some mud and water and a generous supply of rocks encountered before the trail took a decidedly more adventurous turn. Lots of rocky obstacles requiring crawl speed as well as inclines and narrow paths that WILL push your vehicle around. I'm happy to have installed the belly plates this winter be I sure needed them on this trail.
We chose to turn around about 1/2 way down a long steep rocky decline that looked more like a washout than it did a trail. The thought of crawling down the remaining length of loose rocks and boulders was more entertainment than we had planned on. The return ride required locking the front differential to climb up and over the rock obstacles we had just crawled down; the first time I've used that feature and it made all the difference in the world going up hill.
My recommendation is to avoid this park if leisurely riding is your goal. If your up for slow rock crawling and getting bounced around, then this is your spot :-)
