Another Jemez ride
« on: May 17, 2020, 07:03:36 PM »
Another non solo ride.  Went with one of my normal riding buddies and sons on one other ATV and dirt bikes.  Nice ride, but experienced the dreaded 800XC dies when hot issue.  After about 15 miles of riding (a few stops in between) and a little lower speed technical riding it started stumbling on throttle after slowing down or stopping.  Then we stopped to decide our next route and when I tried to take off it died.  Would start and somewhat idle but as soon as I put it in gear it died.  Having read about this issue on previous posts I loosened the fuel cap, no vacuum, so I just let it cool for a while.  Once it cooled it ran fine until the next stop, same thing, died with throttle in gear.  So after several more stop and goes machine is home.  I guess it's off to the dealer.  It wasn't even that warm out, maybe mid 70's and the temp gauge never got above 4 bars.  Most of the time was in three bars.  Once really cooled, about an hour or so of sitting it would fire right up and run like a champ.

Lol...I know that boulder in the background.
It is my understanding that they routed the fuel line close to the exhaust on the same side and it can boil the gas even at 40+psi. The injectors get a gas not liquid so it's the same as vapor locking. I haven't seen this myself so I can't confirm but the cure was either add a second heat shield or wrap the exhaust through that area.  Oddly...not all have this problem.

NMKawierider, thanks for the info on the fuel line.  I will check that before I take it to the dealer.

I had a feeling you would recognize that boulder.
