Uneven Idling
« on: December 10, 2022, 11:17:59 AM »
Friend of mine brought over his 2022 UF800 and asked me about an uneven idle. I checked it out and it does drop to almost shutting down and climbs back up to a high idle. Does this several times a minute and regardless of if engine temp.
Has anyone seen or heard of this before?

Sounds like a sucking idle air control valve...of which CFM has had there share of problems with. Some have been able to clean them out...how I do not know..but they have had good luck. If your friend is not using the Unifilter and a quality foam filter oil, that valve will get trash into it as it gets it's air from the TB's incoming air supply. His engine is also ingesting lots of dust as well.

Actually, yesterday we installed a uni two stage on it and a homebrew snorkel (I can supply pics if you want, video coming soon.) It had the stock filter on it. The buggy has <180 miles on it. Where is this valve located?

On the throttle body itself. There are some YT videos on cleaning..but none I can find doing a CFM. They are all about the same though.

Here is a couple pics of the snorkel setup. I tried many configurations, but this is the only one that would work for me.

This is the result:
I removed the air cleaner box to get access to the valve in question. It is mounted horizontally, and two screws secure it. Fortunately, it is not difficult to get to. Removed it and it seemed to be binding a bit but not ever handled one before I cannot be sure. I pulled out the plunger and blasted it out with carb spray, shook it out and let it sit to allow the residual to evaporate. I will say again that the buggy has less than 200mi on it, so it didn't seem dirty. It feels like there is a small motor in there that moves the plunger. I gave it a blast of wd40 and put the plunger and spring back together. Moving the plunger, it seemed less "stiff". Re-installed it and the other parts and test drove it. Seems to have done the job as the engine behaves as it should. I got all the numbers off the part in case I have to replace it. Apparently, one cannot get it without buying the entire throttle body for >$400.00, there's almost always a "work around".
Thanks for the advice,

Good. Glad it wasn't that it had to be replaced.
