hard or no steering
« on: February 18, 2023, 08:37:09 PM »
I have a 2015 u-force 800 that I have had since new, it has started to have a hard spot or no steering, it seems as if it binds, but it only dose it once and awhile.
today it did it when I first started it and then again about 5 minutes later. It will do it even if the rig is jacked up and the wheels hanging.
I can't tell if it's binding in the joints, in the steering shaft, or just the EPS.
hopefully someone has had this issue before

There are two types of situations that cause momentary binding in UTV steering. Mechanical and electrical. More often then electrical, mechanical can be caused by a failing rack, a failing outer CV joint or u-joint in the steering stem. My own Z if I adjust the steering wheel too far up the first u-joint binds. It's always been this way. Electrical momentary or spot binding is more rare and what happens to the power steering usually effects the entire range...however there are tines when the motor bearings dry or wear that cause spot armature to field winding contact which feels like a spot-lock. Also a failing torque bar can send a bad or incorrect signal to the controller causing erratic behavior but usually it bents or brakes. You might also test the motor power fuse holder and many have had to have their main fuse holders replaces from bad internal crimps...and they use the same fuse holders on the power steering motor power supply. Momentary interruptions in power supply might feel like a binding spot.  Good luck.

To all, I found the problem, The bearings at the top of the steering column went bad and locked up. The bearing is just behind the steering wheel. And according to the parts diagram there is a bearing at the bottom of the column too.
I plan on replacing both when the parts come in.
