clamp failure on Oil return line.
« on: February 05, 2019, 09:07:00 AM »
2015 CFMoto 800 Uforce.

on a ride almost 3 Saturdays ago we had the cabin area fill with oil smoke. shut down the 800 immediately and had to be towed about 5kms to my trailer.
when i went to check on the oil level remaining i had a litre left showing on the dipstick.
couldn't tell if that was accurate ad the entire dipstick tube came off when attempting to check it.

A tube that I paid for that to be re-tightened at the time of the 3rd water pump being replaced.

Dealership said the cause of the oil leak was broken hose clamp on the engine.

When I told the dealership that I spoke with a product engineer at Ideal Tridon (the hose clamp people @ http://idealtridon.com/) for over 18 minutes, I got deer in the headlights look from the dealership.

I was told to inquire what the torque spec was on the clamp they replaced.
the dealership responded we tightened it with a screwdriver (hands up in the air)

these 1/2 inch clamps according to the engineer at Tridon is between 30 low end and 42 high end for inch lbs.
2236 KMS on the SXS

had we been alone on the trail and it was any colder than -16 this could have been very fatal.

Check your hose clamps folks.

Yes, check all the clamps on all hoses. I found several loose and one on a coolant line loose enough to leak.

This also brings up a thought about what another member (davidpaul) found with his oil cooler system. He found a very heavy restriction in his that caused extremely high oil pressure on the out-bound side and pressures so low in the in-bound side it almost made the pressure light come on. Sense it was winter he bypassed the cooler completely for now and currently has normal engine oil pressure. Food for though on why this one had a failure.

Never have been a fan of a mechanical clamp on a barbed fitting with more then 25psi...let alone one with 60+. Just asking for it IMO.
