Belt temperature sensor
« on: December 01, 2022, 07:49:20 PM »
Is there one that can be used with a uforce/zforce 800?
Has anyone ever installed one?
Is it even worth it?

Any can be used with...anything with a belt. The IR units must have a port drilled in directly over the belt in the cover...which is the most accurate way to measure belt temperatures. The air temp type can have their sensors just stick through the exhaust boot into the air flow. I use the Trailtech air temp type. It's all I need to keep my belt from being a problem. If I had a performance machine with 100+ HP,...I would probably want..or need an IR type.

I appreciate the information.
What temps do you consider getting too hot?
Do you have to shut down to let it cool or ?

Many will have a different answer but I installed the temp gauge because I filter the CVT air intake and as you know, here in the southwest we have some very dusty places we ride...which plugs filters very fast. I also added a booster fan to mine so when it starts to plug and the temps reach above 190F, I kick on the booster. It's just a stop-gap measure for a few more miles but it has helped me in a few occasions to get back to camp before having to pull and tap-out the dry-type filter I use in it. From what I read the cooler the better but air temps that exceed 200 is putting the belt in danger as it is actually much hotter..which an IR sensor would verify. If mine gets over 210...which is rare..I stop, leave the booster fan on and run it at a high idle in neutral to cool it down. If that doesn't work, I either shut it off leaving the fan on or..just go a head and clear the filter...which my riding buds shake their heads on. Normal temps are usually between 140 and 170. I did add a Donaldson TopSpin prefilter/particle separator which takes out a bit over 65% of the dust and dirt..which has made it never to plug up either can filter on a single ride. I have the dry type in the CV side but another Unifilter in the engine side. The Donaldson is sized to handle the maximum air needs from both plus 20% more so there is no restriction. In fact the spinner inside doesn't even start to spin until about 5200 RPM. I do plan on an S&B but will wait until I complete the cage mod which will require shortening the tubes. This is what it looks like right now:
