I'm sure it's like all of these in that in 4wd without the diff-locked its really like 3wd but when in 2wd the front is supposed to be disengaged completely, so if yours isn't, I would find out why. There's no "Safety-Thing".

Had the same issue and fixed mine on my 15 Uforce this morning. Has been that way for quite sometime but just finally got a chance to rip it down and see what was going on. My issue a very simple fix actually. Jacked up the from end and put it on stands. Removed the bumper cover. Pulled the winch and sat it on the swing arm upper pass swing arm. Took the 4 differential bracket bolts out from the mounting plate underneath then lifted the dif and slid it forward so I could get the cap screws out of the servo to remove it. What I found was the rack the servo slides back and forth to engage it must have jumped or been put together wrong and was out of position. I am leaning to it being that way from the start since there is no signs of the rack being damaged at all from the gears not meshing correctly. I slid the rack to disengage it and put the servo motor back on, bolted everything back up and cycled it off and on a couple dozen times and worked perfectly every time. You will loose some diff fluid but not much if ya jack it up as high as I did. Make sure ya have some on hand to top it off when done.
