4WD Issue
« on: April 05, 2020, 04:39:13 PM »
So I was out for my first real trail ride on my 2019, about 100 miles on it. I generally just use it around the property. Anywho, all of a sudden the 4wd would not disengage and the front diff was still locked. Got it home, put it up on the lift to find that wiring going to the front diff cover had been ripped out by a stick or something of the sort. Trouble is I can’t find a parts diagram anywhere to order a new one and try to not have to take it to the dealer.

Damn that's some bad luck.

Was the 4WD locked or just on?

My first thought was "I hope he isn't driving in 4WD lock all the time ..."

I generally run in 2wd all the time unless I need to throw it in four wheel to get through something. In this instance I needed to lock the front differential to get through a pretty good ditch and out the other side. While coming out the other side a stick got up in there and severed the wiring. So now the front diff is locked in and I can’t get it out. Would t be that big of a deal if I could get it back in 2wd to still use around the house.

Just 4wd..no but having the two axles locked together and turning...not something you want to do much of. Can always pull the actuator and slide the selector back to the 2wd position and unplug the actuator.

I had the cover of the actuator off. Some copper electrical connections in there and a bunch of gear work. You’re saying to somehow get the gear work to move and go back to 2WD?

Take the actuator off, move the slide to the right, reinstall the actuator. The plastic thing with the teeth in this pic. It is actually in the unlocked 2wd position in the pic.

Thanks so much for the guidance. I was able to get it up on the lift today and get that toggled over so it’s in 2wd now till the new actuator comes in. I really appreciate the help.

Welcome. Did you see anything out of the ordinary in there? Lots of times that plastic slider gets it's teeth shredded-off or the fork that it operates gets bent..

Didn’t notice anything abnormal. I inspected the teeth on the slide bar, all seemed to be fine. The only thing I did notice was that the amount of gear oil that came out when I split the actuator from the differential, seemed to be much more than it took when I filled it back up.
