Welcome! I had same issue in the beginning as well. Yes, you do need to press brake pedal and sometimes rock the machine as well. Also, sometimes I will shift to low gear but then just revs up and nothing or grind a little. I ended up adjusting the shift linkage a little and that helped. After awhile you learn how to finesse it and it will happen a lot less.
Can you explain how to adjust the shift linkage? I am having the same problem as everyone here...
