irregular front tire wear
« on: July 31, 2021, 10:55:12 AM »
I have an issue with irregular tire wear on the front tires of my 2020 500HO two-up, one side is wearing on the outside, the other side is wearing on the inside. I checked the toe-in as per the manual and it seemed within spec but I was wondering about the "string method" to more accurately check toe in, something isn't right with the wear patterns. Checked front end components including the wheel bearings, all is good there.

Has anyone used this method that can provide some help/advise/guidance or another fix. Any and all will be appreciated,
thanks

I can provide a video I did on my Brute force many years ago but you will have to disregard the parts that concern the aftermarket P/S system. However toe, either in or out, balances to the center and makes even wear on both tires. For example too much toe-in causes it to roll-over the outside edge making the outside of each tire wear...and wear the same. The opposite is true with too much toe-out.

For yours to have opposite effects on either tire would require either a combination of above with a camber problem on one side..a big one...assuming all is well with the bearings and brakes. Drive it around just a little and park it on flat, level concrete. Get a short level and rig it to make contact only with the top and bottom bead edge of the rim. On an ATV this should be the same..both level straight up and down of withing 2 degrees either way but the same. If you stopped going forward, back it up about 4-feet and take another reading. If different you have some loose parts. If the same yet each side is different, then there is something wrong..like a bent a-arm or frame damage. In the mean time here is that video. Yours will be slightly different but you will get the jest of it.
