Suspension bushings.
« on: October 26, 2016, 05:31:27 PM »
Mine are loose enough to need replacement. I don't want to use the oem ones because they were not good to start. I have decided to make some Delrin bushings. The z6 and z8 share the same ones but at different quantities. Depending on on how it goes, I may make extra.

Cool. I am in need of some of the rear knuckle bushings on my Z8 myself and don't have the means to make my own so I am looking forward to some real bushings.

Right now I'm stuck on Material. I need 30mm Dia. Delrin at over 5' of it to make a set. I have some on hand, but it was too small. I will have to shop around and see if I can find some that won't take a month to get here.

Just food for thought. When I was talking with Energy Suspension about these they do and will sell stock material. It's high grade polyurethane but I have had a set of their bushings on my Brute's sway bar now for over 10 years and they are still like new. They gave me a special link to material sales so let me know if you want it. I have it in an email...somewhere...I hope.

Delrin is Self lubricating. I was thinking about doing stainless spacers also. Between the two, I would not need grease. I would still use it to keep water out of there. Polyurethane is just a pain to work with. Delrin cuts well and holds size too. Bad thing is it is expensive. I'm going to be close to  $75 for the stock.

Yeah it's the best. I have Delrin bushings in my lower front a-arms on the Brute. I grease them but like you say, it's not necessary...only to push any water out.

the bushing count is 16 short and 12 of the long ones.  I did check and the Z8 has the same size and count as the Z6. I did check the bores in the arms and found they were just drilled. this means that the hole size will vary a bit. I think I will make the OD to the largest of what I find. I will have to beat in the rest and ream the holes again after they are installed because the ID will compress a bit with that much of a press fit. I am also going to see if I can find the stainless pipe for the spacers. If you have ever drilled 300SS before, it sucks and will take way too long to make a set from bar stock. The OEM spacers are an odd dia. but as long as the bushings match, no big deal.

Looks like I'm buying some  rear wheel bearings too. I light of needing to buy a puller and the wood stove needing a rebuild, I'm going to have to hold off on this for a bit. I will for sure have there done before spring. I will post bearing specs and part numbers after I have them.

I was going to use these guy's sleeves. A little expensive each but if they last it will be worth it. And you can standardize. I was going to custom size from these 6" ones and if I needed longer for the front upper I was going to have this company cut them for me.

The bolts are 10mm. You will need to drill these out or change out to 3/8 bolts. That might get expensive.

True but I was looking at 3/8" is being 9.50mm. The bolts are slightly under 10mm at 9.59mm at the thread and of you look at the sleeve's ID tolerances being slightly over 3/8 as much as +.010", it just might go. If not, I'm not a fan of CFM's soft bolts and have a bolt supplier close by.

The sleeves right now are .638 ish. And they are loose. 5/8 .625 will make it worse. I'm on the hunt for some stainless with an ID of .400+ and OD close to the original ones. Once I have that I will have my bushing ID.
