Stupid question about 4 wheel drive
« on: March 07, 2023, 03:10:40 PM »
I know this should be easy to figure out but I’m having a brain fart. If you are driving your sxs in 2 wheel drive, the front axles spin, correct? So the front differential is turning at all times, correct? Does this mean that the front differential has the same amount of miles as the rear even in 2 wheel drive or is the differential being unlocked and open keep parts of it from turning? Curious as to why it’s always cleaner on my machine. I only use 4x4 about 5-10% of the time while driving.

On these the drive line spins all the time rotating the pinion which in turn rotates the carrier all the time. The 4wd and 4wd-loc functions locks the axles to the carrier first and then in the loc position locks the axles through the spider. On others the drive line is locked and unlocks from the pinion. In all cases while moving all the parts are in play and moving..as in the wheels are turning the axles and the engine is turning the bevel, drive line & ring/pinion.
