Question about passing on trail ride
« on: July 14, 2026, 12:54:56 PM »
I am still new to trail riding in my Zforce. Most of my rides have been on one way trails in a state park. This past weekend, I was out on the Cheese Corner Trail in SW Wisconsin. Pretty sure it's a converted railroad bed that travels both ways between several towns.

When meeting up with another SxS going opposite way, we would both slow down and pull over to have enough room to pass each other. But most of the drivers would then extend their arms with a closed fist.

I get acknowledging the other driver but why a closed fist? When riding my motorcycle down the road, it's common to extend left arm at downward angle and extend the first 2 fingers. And I have also noticed Jeep Wrangler owners often while holding steering wheel, extend first 2 fingers on their left hand to acknowledge another Jeep Wrangler.

So is it just personal preference with extended arm and fist or does it mean something that I should be aware of? Is it something common in other locations as well or is it a local custom? Just curious.

For us a closed fist means no other riders behind him to worry about. The number of fingers would indicate the number of riders behind him you are about to encounter.

Ah! Ok, that clears that up. I'm glad I asked then. Thanks!

If they flash two fingers twice that's 4 or more behind him....of course one finger means only one more coming. A open hand is just a wave or a greeting and thanks for moving over.

Thank you. I figured there was some kind of protocol or etiquette thing that was being used while trail riding but just wasn't sure what it was. Thanks for clearing this up. Very helpful. I'm sure there is more to learn.
