Memorial Weekend damage
« on: June 06, 2017, 09:05:29 PM »
While riding Memorial Weekend we took a hard hit to the undercarriage. Finally got a peek at it tonight.  Peeled the factory skid plate back and it looks like I tweaked the front motor mount.  I'm going to take all the skid plates off tomorrow night and see what I'm up against.  It's on a Z6EX.

The factory skid plates on ALL machines (regardless of brand) are not really skid plates.  They are more of a splash liner.  I picked up a 4'x8' piece of 1/8" aluminum and made my own belly skid plate, A arm guards and diff guards.  The whole belly of my Z8 is fully protected and slides well over logs, rocks and ruts.  I would HIGHLY suggest everyone doing something like that if you plan to take it out and ride hard.  I will add that there are companies that make HDPE (plastic) skid plates.  And while those would work for most people HDPE will not stand up to the abuse that aluminum will.  I knew a guy that had HDPE and had a stick go through the plastic skid plate and take out his brake line.  He was trying to convince me how much better HDPE was than aluminum.  I told him "I have never seen a stick no matter how big it is go though 1/8" thick aluminum.  I will stick to what I know will protect the underside of my cart".
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

I agree.  If I can get the old one straight, I think I will try to use it as a template to make one out of aluminum.  Hopefully I can get the motor mount straightened back out.

Metal supply places have them.  Prices vary from day to day but I when i got mine prices were high and it was just over $200 for it.

My home-made steel skids have welded drops-covers over the baskets and boy..do they ever get a workout sometimes. Need something that just slides by them..nothing hanging down that can get caught of stuff.

What is your opinion of this motor mount bracket?  It's not as jacked as I thought it was.  Turns out it's welded at an angle.  Just had a dent in the middle.  Motor seems solid.  I'm thinking it's ok.

Run it! Maybe see if you can flex that straight again but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Your fine.  Put some real skid plates on that thing and beat the crap out of it LOL.  If a small dent worries you guys you would hate to see the underside of mine from before i put real skid plates on it LOL.  I run soft suspension so sometimes I use the skid plates as suspension parts LOL

LOL Right! I have "customized" my undercarriage for more clearance now it does't hit the same things it did before. Works great. ;D ;D
Still going to look into the aluminium though. I'll see exactly what they will charge me to cut one out on their plasma cutter. Friend of mine owns a very successful commercial HVAC/Sheet metal company.
Maybe he will give me a very good deal if I get a few.
