fuel pump continuously making high pitch hum
« on: September 18, 2017, 02:26:09 PM »
At times it seemed that my engine was starving for fuel so I pulled the tank and cleaned the fuel system a month or so back, I found a lot of dirt in the bottom of the tank and the filter on the foot of the fuel pump was about 50% blocked, I also found something strange in the tank a small washer shaped object somewhat like the fiber washers to protect automotive battery terminals, this thing  seemed to be thin layers of plastic and red scotch brite, anyway cleaned the whole system from tank to injector and all seems well except for this annoying hum from the fuel pump, at the same time I pulled the tank I was doing my apprentice work at the NMK correspondence school of dust, sound and noise prevention and I insulated the rear wall behind the seats and the entire center console and it is a lot quieter in the cab now, so I am wondering if the hum from the pump is normal and was always there and I just couldn't hear it above the clammer of the engine or if something is not quite right.

Yuk..I wonder if they use that as a prefilter over the intake or something....like they do a filter sock in a vehicle. Anyway looks like it would be better without that nasty thing.

I don't hear my pump unless it's running. It's either on or off...no other noise.

You could be right, I bought it used so I don't have a clue, strangely enough, there was never an inline filter from the factory between the tank and the injector, the fuel hose was intact and the wire protector was one piece from the tank to the injector. I didn't think there should be any noise from the pump unless it's running, guess I'll pull the pump and take a look at it.

And I would get an inline filter in it. Only takes a piece of dust the size of flour to stick an injector.....and if there isn't anything on pump's intake..might better fashion something.

There is a filter on the pickup of the pump and I installed an inline filter when I realized there was none. I am rather surprised that CFM never installed one and that for 3 years my dealer who serviced it never suggested that I put one in, just another reason not to return to my dealer, I won't have an option if I have a major engine or transmission issue, other than that they won't see this machine again.

The Z8's line pressure is .33MPa which is 47.86psi. I'm sure the Z6 is the same or close. Just get a steel bodied in-line filter for any fuel injection system with the right size line and you should be fine. Get one you can use clamps on though.

I would strongly recommend it, the filter on the pickup of the pump and the small filter in the injector are not sufficient to keep the injector clean. When I pulled the tank and cleaned the lines I also tired to clean the injector and while I did get some dirt out and the performance was a bit better I still was not getting an even spray from the injector, I took it to a local shop and when he tested it on his equipment you could see an uneven spray from the injector, he pulled the very tiny filter from the injector and found that some dirt had got past it, 2 hours in the ultrasonic cleaner and it was back to normal.
