First impressions of CF 800 US-A
« on: August 16, 2017, 12:26:36 AM »
Picked up my new 800 ordered from Quebec. It's my first UTV after decades of quads.
More positives than negatives on the CF Moto for sure.  Good and snappy off the line. Don't know the top speed yet as I'm still breaking it in, plenty enough for me for sure. Just 2" wider than the King Quad
but oh, a foot and a half longer so it's turning circle is a good bit more. Ground clearance not great and with the longer base it grounds out more on the tops of hummocks. Stock skid plates are very unimpressive, more like splash guards. Have to do something about that.

But it has a wet clutch constant tension belt system, very wide range CVT. Low range is it seems much less than half the ratio of high. The wet clutch seems to be at lockup at a very low speed. There is more engine braking than I have ever seen! If the revs are started out low when in low range it descends the steepest grades I could yet find, at idle RPM and at 2-3 KMH! The steepest I can find and you don't ever touch the brake. Not a whisker above idle, AT idle (1300). It just does not gain speed unless you give it gas. Feels eerily like it's being lowered on a winch line.If you rev it past 2500 then it starts picking up speed, but not unless.
It will climb insane angle slopes. The back axle is well behind the driver and of course any passenger and all the weight is down around the level of your ass, so it's uncannily stable. I climb steep things with confidence when alone that I would have either winched up or not have tried at all on my ATV, so as not to get in a pickle and not have help.
Overgrown trails it just bulls through, the big 1.66 inch rops bars just shove it all out of the way, things that would have lacerated the hell out of a guy on a quad. (and if some butthole strung a wire up across a trail you just break the thing.)
Good instrumentation. eight segment gas gauge and eight segment temperature gauge, odo/trip/tach (tach!) and halogen headlights, turn signals, hazards, horn, 3000 lb winch with wire remote, little cubby holes all over the place. Really decent open top rear storage 'box' of about six cubic feet.
Decent gas shocks with adjustable compression and rebound but the preload is cranked so high on delivery that it feels like it's sprung to accommodate being dropped out of a plane. I'll play a bit with the preload tomorrow. I'll lose a bit more GC yet but maybe get a less pothole jarring ride.

This is the 50" 'trail' version, the same cab et al on the wider 60 inch version, that one just has longer a arms, axles. I get it that the shorter arms mean less suspension travel but it feels like I'm only using about 2 or 2 1/2 inches of what I do have, it's that stiff. We'll see. Overall I like it. Cindy is delighted. She can drive it.
I aired the tires down to 7 and 10, and softened the front preload by 1/4" or so, we'll see if that helps with the bone jarring pothole behavior. Haven't tried it out yet with those settings. I already quickened the compression and slowed the front rebound and that helped.

Welcome to the site!  Sounds like you have found that these machines are quite capable.  One thing we all always suggest is checking the air filter.  The factory ones have been known to come apart and allow dirt to suck into the engine and ruin them.  A UNI or K&N are suggested and a quick search on here will find you the part numbers.  Cheap insurance against a ruined motor.  I have the EX (wider one) but I have heard from the other guys on here that the narrower machines do ride a bit stiffer.  Playing with the shock adjustments you should be able to tame that though.  Also you could gain some of your GC back by going with larger tires as these machines will accommodate them quite easily.  If you have any questions just ask!
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

Welcome to the CFM World! I have added some things to improve performance and GC and they have all paid off. Its a nice feeling driving around and knowing I paid half of what my other buddies did for their buggies! Enjoy!
