Yeah they are needed. I once bought the full set of EX fender flairs for my 53 including the optional rear wings. When I decided the fenders were too goofy-looking and made my own, I kept the rear wings and built them into the new flairs. Amazing how much they catch and keep out of the bed. Here's a pic.

I was thinking about doing them for a while and then I saw your video and what you made and decided to get off my butt and do something, now I need to throw some mud on them or wash the whole thing so they blend in a little better, I drove through a bunch of mud and puddles and couldn't get them dirty.
