DIY LED whips?
« on: August 21, 2019, 09:21:03 PM »
Who here has built one of these?  I've got a 'Light Up The Night' ATV run coming up, it's a fundraiser for local breast cancer survivors.  The idea is to light up your machine however you want and go on a night run with a ton of other bikes.  I've been thinking about building a couple LED whips.  I don't plan to use them very often, hence building my own vs buying actual lighted whips.    I'm thinking about using fiberglass CB antennas (I work at a truck dealership and can get them cheap), probably no more than 3' long, but would they stand up to being used on a SXS occasionally?  I've seen disconnects using airline fittings, but how would I go about securing the fitting to the antenna?  I want to probably use 2 whips with one controller, so I'd be splicing some wiring there.  I've been watching youtube vids and they seem pretty easy and straightforward to do, I'm just looking for tips from anyone who has done it.  How you mounted them, quick disconnects, problems you ran into, etc.  Any tips are welcome!
