Coolant drip
« on: August 23, 2017, 09:05:49 AM »
I noticed this morning a small puddle of coolant under my 2017 z8 ex which only has,80 miles on it. When I looked closer I seen a small clear hose on the bottom of the engine just below the coolant drain plug which had coolant in it.that is where the puddle came from. So my question is what is that clear hose for and should it be open like that or is it supposed to go to something

This is another very common issue with these. That is the weep tube coming from the weep chamber between the water pump's mechanical seal and the engine's oil seal on the water pump's drive shaft. Most all start life with a small leak past the mechanical seal, then 98% quit by 200 miles as that seal breaks-in. The 2% that don't have to be replaced but..it's under warranty. You do need to keep the recovery tank full though while this process goes on. It's under the hood to the right of the radiator. Just put 50/50 green in it or any coolant formulated for all types. I use Peak. It's OK to overfill it some. Better too much then not enough in this case.

When I filled my bottle to the correct level some leaked out of that tube. I took it to the dealer they said I overfilled it. It seems to have found it's happy place which is less than what it says on the bottle but the radiator is always full, if I put more in the bottle it leaks, if I leave it alone it doesn't So I have decided to leave it alone and just check the radiator level.

I just finished a 2 month long repair/trouble shooting process with my dealer and that same area. 1st off there is recall from CFM about that tube. They relocate it somehow. Second it took 3 shipments from CFM of water pump gaskets, WP assemblies..one from the 1000 that was supposed to be universal...and isn't...finally my dealer took one off of a new wrecked Trail. Once I got it back he had actually replaced what looked like the side of the motor around the WP area. Stopped dripping anyway. That tube is gone....not sure where it was relocated to....maybe Ohio.
I would imagine my dealer would talk to yours if they have any questions.

Good luck.

I have experience with type of mechanical seals they use. There are two cermic disks in there. One is spring loaded and the faces rub together keeping the coolant only in the impeller cavity. If the disks are rough or not flat, they let coolant by into the open area between the mechanical seal and the oil seal for the impeller shaft. This has a drain hole for rogue coolant to go. My best guess is they really need to focus on the quality of the disks faces and have them ground flat at the manufacturers. 3M makes a diamond lapping paper for carbide and cermic. I have used that to resurface the faces.

Thanks, everyone for your replies and advice. I am going to have the first break in service done with an the next week. I think I will ask them to look at it or at least let them know it is using coolant.

I finally took it in to the dealer for the break in service and told them about the leak . They called a few hours and told me they will be replacing the water pump and seals. I should get it back in a week.

Hmm, so there is, in fact, a recall regarding that. It's a good thing they admitted on that.

Most quit within 200 miles but be sure to keep the bottle full. Every time it cools down it will pull-in what it lost.
