I am having a problem getting my 500ho started. I took off the left side crankcase cover and replaced all of the water pump internals and after I filled up the antifreeze and oil I tried starting it to check for leaks and all it would do is click. I have replaced the starter solenoid and the starter motor and still nothing but a click. I really need help and am lost at what i could have done. It ran before i did any of this work and it did have a little problem starting before too but eventually started right up.

Assuming all the connections are clean and tight ...

How does it spin when you jump the starter solenoid?

I'm guessing it is time to replace the battery.
Take it in and have it tested at most any car parts store or Battery Plus type store.

It was this piece of metal. It was bent and binding up on the gears not allowing it to turn. But now I have to wait a week for the crankcase gasket because rtv silicone is too thin. When I tighten the bolts on the left side by the starter it wont turn over but if I loosen them slightly it will turn. So I'm guessing with the thickness of the gasket it should work.

Do you know how it got bent?

I can't imagine a design where the thickness of a gasket should make a difference. What is being interfered with without the gasket? Is it something a little filing would correct?

And what was the problem with starting before you fixed the water pump? Is that problem still evident?

Just wondering out loud what's being missed.

I believe it got bent because I loosened the bolt holding it down and didnt get it put back in its correct position. I think the starter was going bad because when we took apart the old starter it smelled real bad like burnt electrical. As for the thickness of the gasket if I tighten all the bolts on the left side it won't turn but loosen then slightly Nd it doen turn all of the right side bolts are tight. and the rtv silicone is alot thinner than the gasket will be. It's worth a shot trying a new gasket I just have to wait because the only dealer that sells these wonderful brand of atvs doesn't stock any parts. I just bought a brand new can am outlander yesterday and will never buy another CF I have replaced the water pump internals twice in the last 2 years and it's only 3 years old and now I had to replace the starter.

I'll be curious to hear the final result.

Good luck!

Curious, how difficult was it to replace starter?

Having the "click" noise when trying to start.  Narrowed it down to the starter.

If u dont have tiny baby hands the bottom bolt was pretty hard to get out but other than that it was easy

so the gasket did the trick. it started right up and ran great all weekend. crazy to think that thin gasket would prevent it from starting but it did.

That's nuts! But you can't argue with success ;-)
