2 point lap belt vs factory shoulder belt vs 5 point.

I'll admit.  I don't wear my seat belt.  I don't force my passenger (gf) to wear one. When I do need it in a sticky situation its usually packed with mud, dirt, and the teeth of poor people so it doesn't work.  It's always jammed with debris.  Also the factory belt is very uncomfortable.  Nothing like hard, gray, nylon webbing cutting into your Jugular on every bump and bounce.  I want to pull the factory 3-point harness and install a quality 2 inch lap belt.  Something like this:

I've been around the block a time or two in race cars and trucks of various sorts.  A 5-point harness is simply not going to work.  Don't even mention it.  If you think its a good idea you haven't worn one.  It's a huge PIA to get that thing hooked up.  I tend to get in and out of the machine a lot.  I couldn't even imagine what it takes to get it buckled covered in mud, gruel, and various types of unfriendly soil.  They may look cool but, they are unnecessary in a SXS in, my opinion.  What are your thoughts on a 2 point lap belt?  I don't wear my factory belt because it sucks.  I would wear a 2-point every time.  They are quick and easy to put on and take off.  Do you think a 2 point lap belt would provide enough protection in the case of a crash?  Please discuss.  Excuse grammar, I'm on a phone and it hates me.

The Cdn version is standard 4 pt, painful to adjust if different rider's. Once they are set quick & easy to get in & out.

I seen two wrecks last season, stupid drivers in both cases. One was totalled the second should have been, in both cases no was hurt. The 4pt harness & ROPS saved the stupid operators & their innocent passengers.

Watching video of how people are tossed about in the cab when things go sideways....heads banging together......Helmets & 4pt is my vote. I will add mandatory

I agree with ctdls, if there is any chance of an accident involving a roll-over or crash, and there always is, at least a 4-point should be warn. Even the el'cheapos I have from SATV kept me inside the cage when I went on my side once where a lap belt or even the factory 3 point wouldn't have. But..if you never wear anything and would at least wear the 2 point, then that's probably better then nothing. Anything is a PITA to get in and out of..even a 4 point and I'll admit there have been times when I just want to tuck them behind the seat...but I gota say when the trail gets sketchy, it nice to know I as long as I keep a grip on the wheel, my entire body will stay inside the cage if it goes over. I will also admit I probably leave mine looser then I should but I think they will still do the job and I always wear a helmet...so does my passenger.   

Ditto. Have the Canadian 4 point belt, it's pretty easy on and off.
I get 4 point, both shoulders and both hips.
What n' heck's a five point harness? Another belt between your legs to the back? Another belt around your head?

I do notice that if I have the shoulder belts snugged up to where I think the maker intends them to be, then I'm barely able to reach the dash switches or 4wd controller. Maybe I have T rex arms or something. I leave the shoulder belts a little sloppy for that reason. I'm not going to jerk and strain like a guard dog on a chain every time I need to operate controls, piss on that.

Two point is better than no safety restraint. 

My 800 had the four point factory belts which I upgraded to four point system with the quick latch release.

I am on the same page as ctdls (mandatory). I've seen the results/dealt with persons that were involved in a crash with no restraint and ones with. The ones without proper restrains in the more serious collisions didn't get to see the sunrise the next day. In a rollover, no restraints on equals ejection from your ride.

Also agree....4 point harness, slightly loose for steering and reaching moments....and no helmet means NO RIDE !

Now I'm a firm believer in helmets for ORV, always have worn them but just for the sake of discussion, why is it that a person can legally ride offroad without any headgear in a Jeep that has no roof or any roll protection at all, wearing just a lap belt, but the occupants of a SXS that has a four point seat harness and a fully enclosing approved rollover protective structure, is required (or expected) to wear a helmet?
Isn't that a bit odd?

Now I'm a firm believer in helmets for ORV, always have worn them but just for the sake of discussion, why is it that a person can legally ride 60 mile an hour helmetless in a Jeep that has no roof or any roll protection at all and may even have the doors removed, wearing just a lap belt, on public roads or off road, but the occupants of a SXS that has a four point seat harness and a full approved rollover protective structure is required (or expected) to wear a helmet?

Yeah..odd..go figure. I think the perception..or at least statistically, a vehicle is more likely to become "rubber-side-up" off road then on road...and that's probably true but...in reality, the outcome of having an accident at 60mph with an open vehicle and light restraints is..or can be.. far worse.

Although not great, the new 1000 has moved the belt higher on the frame which seems to help a little. They have also added mounting points for four point harnesses by putting captive nuts on the cross bar.

I have the pro armor 4 pt harness and are easy to get in an out of. I am a firm believer in a seat belt of some sort. Just last week a kid in my area rolled his rzr and got tossed out and died. He was not wearing helmet or seat belt. Please wear some kind of seat belt.

Thank you for the replies.  The helmet rule is strictly enforced in my machine.  I may need to rethink my strategy on belts.  I considered the 2 point because of the area that I ride in.  I spend a lot of time getting in and out of my machine.  Around these parts of North East Pennsyltucky we tend to ride a few miles, get out, shoot the S, ride a few miles, get out, shoot the S, etc.....  If (when) I roll the 800EX it will be at a speed of less than 2 MPH.  Most likely it will be on a rock formation, hill climg, or coal in a rock crawling environment.  I don't ever see a complete roll. Just more of a dropping on the side and some sliding.  Of course, this is what I imagine not what could really happen.  The Z800 does occasionally see some 70 mph runs down a pole line, fire tower or, windmill road.  That's pretty rare though.  Most riding is slow, dodging rocks and trees through the heavy forest or running old mining roads.  Lots of rock that requires a very light preload and quick compression damping on the shocks.  Maybe some of the PA boys will chime in and talk about their riding environment.

I think we just have to use our best judgment. There are times when I don't use my belts...and with my wife along-she flat refuses to wear a helmet or belts so its slow and easy roads with her.. but when with the guys..yeah I better have all my sh*t together..lol
