blinking oil pressure light
« on: March 14, 2019, 11:37:30 AM »
been doing alot of hard riding lately in deep snow.

the last two times i got stuck, which i did work my way out of, but noticed that my oil pressure light was blinking when i got out of my stuck situation.

it went off right away, never came back on. next time i got stuck, same thing again.

checked out and all good maybe even a little but over the full mark.

what should i be checking first here? oil filter? pressure sensor? it seems to run and drive completely fine but when im strugging to get out of a stuck situation it blinks as if im loosing oil pressure however i feel like its an electrical issue and im not actually loosing pressure. thoughts?

There have been some bad oil pressure sending units out there between 2017 and early 2018 so I would be tempted to replace it but while the sending unit is out, I would absolutely screw-in a pressure gauge to the port and get the actual pressure. The reasoning is: sense it does this when the engine is at it's hottest, the oil will be at it's thinnest and lowest pressure. And if cold or at normal temps it's already below what the book calls for..better find out why now before the engine is lost...as sustained high RPMs and heat have been known to take out the 800's rod bearings and the first sign of that is lowered oil pressure...and for piece of mind. If it holds normal pressure cold and hot, then the issue is probably the sending unit. I am unsure where an electrical issue could be that only does it when stuck...so...

Easiest thing to check first is the oil presure sensor. But in your case get a propper measurement on the oilpreasure because my expeience of broken oilpreasure  sensors (on a cf 520) are that out of nowere it youst start to beep and flash the oil ligt until you replace the sensor with a new one. Before you drive with it more get a propper measurement of the oilpreasure youst in case. If it have the correct oilprasure you can check other things after that

Hi Steve,

Blinking oil pressure light on the X8 is a common problem, especially after braking or accelerating hard.

It will become an ongoing problem if you follow the CFMOTO manual of topping up engine oil to the correct Max fill point on the dip stick in the manual.

Ignore the manual if you want the oil light to stop blinking and add an additional approx 0.50 of litre of engine oil over the recommended amount, now it will be showing over the top of the max fill mark on the dip stick. But the light will stop blinking!

The above I have applied to all of my X8's, they have been faultless since applying the above method.

However, the above method assumes that you are using correct viscosity engine oils and have confirmed oil pressure is OK? If the oil light continues to blink on/off after applying above method, there is the possibility of low oil pressure, wrong engine oil viscosity i.e. too thick, or the oil sensor that everyone appears to go for with the issue you are getting. In my experience the oil pressure sensor has never been at fault.
