Z800 power loss
« on: August 04, 2020, 10:53:33 AM »
Recently I have lost at least half power when entering water maybe 1.5’ deep my machine is snorkelled. I ended up getting water into the clutch the first time I figured my complete power loss must have been due too that but doubted it. Found the exhaust melted the snorkel at a seam. So redid them completely and used plenty more exhaust wrap on both the exhaust and the snorkel piping. But since I have still had a problem, crossing water I’ll loose power, can’t get any rpm out of it even in neutral thus causing me too become “stuck” the injector light will come on and stay on. But while being pulled out it gets too a point of about that 1’ 8” roughly all power comes back 100% and away I go like nothing happened. I turn the key off for a few seconds start it back up and light goes out. I’ve check the plug wires, all connections I can possible find. I’m stumped. Has annoying had a similar experience or have any idea what els I could check? I’ve tried spraying it with water running in the shop with the fire hose not being able too duplicate the problem.

If you knew what error caused the MIL light to come on, you would know where to look. Of all the sensors and conditions that can cause the ECU to throw a code, only a few can actually cause a change in engine operation. Something is getting wet that shouldn't. Finding it is sometimes the tough part..but it's there. It can be found and fixed.

Any idea what staying on solid means? Or would the code be stored even with the light off? And how too check or only the dealer be able too tell me?

Some of the service manuals will tell you how to make it flash the code and how to read that code. Most want you to use their PDA but that's expensive. These do not store codes, they only display the fault code while it is at fault. Once the problem is corrected, it goes away so you need to get it while its on.

So I called the dealer they say there is no way for me too get a flash code and the claim codes are stored. There 3 hours away so that’s quite the gamble too drive there just too see. Can’t find anything online too tell me what to press too get the flash code.

Maybe the 2018 and newer store codes but to the best of my knowledge the prior years do not. Yours is a 16 so its very much like my 15. I'll bet the procedure for getting it to flash the code is the same...but again, it has to be in error at the time.

The 18+s are different so..the dealer may be the best option after a full inspection...and a few cold ones. :)

A couple cold ones in now. I have verified that it is 100% not spark related. Unplugging a coil or removing a boot and putting top ground and running it’s wayyyyy more rough than when wet and it does not set off the mill light. So now I’m thinking while greasing every connection.. I really do wonder what it is. Can’t be charging or battery related as I verified my volts are at 14.2 lowest being 13.8 when the problem occurs.

I may have figured what might be causing my power loss. I meticulously went thru all my wiring after taking all plastic off the machine and thoroughly checked the condition of the connections all was great shape. So greased all the plugs anyway. Went out yesterday and came too a spot that was deep with hard bottom perfect for a test with lots of people too help if need be. I’ve concluded that water is getting into the exhaust somehow and getting a o2 sensor wet. Could anyone verify that this would be a possibility?

Water in the exhaust? Affecting the O2 sensor? Not buying it.

Trying to understand the symptoms here.

Drive it into water 1.5 foot deep, and the engine drops to idle and won't rev but doesn't stall? Is it a smooth idle?

Moving it to lower water levels and all power returns?

That is absolutely correct. Smooth ide also yes. Basically like I completely loose the throttle until the exhaust is out of the water. The instant the tail pipe comes out it’s 100% power and instant rpms instantly
