Weak Brakes fixed?
« on: May 24, 2016, 12:55:08 PM »
From day one my brakes sucked. Even after the pads were well broke in it's brakes were what I considered dangerous. Almost a 2-footed job to stop it in a hurry. Never felt like the fronts were doing much where the fronts should be 60% of the stopping power. I even replaced the pads on front in hopes it would help. Decided to bleed the brakes as the way the peddle acted (double-stop) was one indication was there may be air in the system. Sure enough, there was a good amount of air in the front and a little in the rear. I flushed the system with fresh fluid while doing it too. A quick test behind the shop showed significant improvement in stopping power even to the point that the front, even with the brand new pads, takes a dive now when applying brakes...something it's never done. Actually skidded all four tires on the shop concrete floor..with one foot and about half the pressure as before! So..way better!

So, some of these are not being bled well from the factory and if yours suck...try bleeding them. Be aware it only takes 3.5 pumps to empty the reservoir so refill it after every 2 if done manually.

Now I can't wait to get the new front pads broke in. Might actually stop like everyone's else's.  :)

If you were going to bring it by to work on that squeak, we can do it then if you want.

This is great to hear. When i test drove that 16 Z Force the brakes were a glaring problem to me. Brake Fluid change is an easy and cheap fix. I went for a rip on my dirt bike today, and the new fluid made the brakes feel so great the entire ride. Something so small makes such a huge difference.

So, are you saying they don't use good brake fluid? My brakes are not as good as RZRs and other brands, but are adequate.

No, just can't seem to get all the air out of the system at the factory. Fluid is fine- I just wanted a name brand in it.

Long as it says DOT 3/4 its OK. Did I use the cheapest? Well..no. I used Castro synthetic brake fluid. To switch over you heave to bleed the system until all the old is out.

I use Maxima Super Hi Temp fluid in everything. The boiling point is about 80f higher for the  given DOT rating compared to automotive style fluids. I have noticed a more "smoother" and "exact" feeling at the pedal/lever when compared to using a automotive fluid. I think the seal conditioners in the Maxima actually make everything work a tad more precise.

It works so good, that I have never felt the need to upgrade to braided brake lines on any of my dirt bikes. Its that good.

Just a final report on this. After the new front brake pads and the bleeding I had the chance to use them for almost a 100 miles in the high-country where the new pads did get broke in. I can safely say that now with moderate pressure and one foot.. I can slide all four wheels to a stop. It still is not as good as my friend's RzR but at least they are acceptable now. The new aftermarket pads on front do provide better friction then the OE's in the back and am looking forward to changing the backs out as soon as I can...even if they are the CFM upgraded pads they have to be better then what the factory puts on them.

So in short, you can make these brakes much better by replacing the factory pads, bleeding the air out and while at it, replacing the brake fluid with a quality brand.

What brakes did you use for the front?  I ordered from from ebay that another member suggested (ebay name sixty or something like that) and they are SOOOOO much thicker that its not even funny.  even after taking half the brake material off of each of the front pads they still drag.  I would like better braking performance but i hate that my brakes drag still
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

Those are the ones I used too and had to take ..well a bit more then half the pad off as well. I thought it was a manufacturing error but I bought two sets for each side and both sets for that side were the same..almost twice as thick as the other side and too thick to use without taking material off.  The other side was fine. A bit of a bitch to machine them flat even with a bench belt sander. But they did break in and are working fine.

These EBC FA651X are for the rears. The photo used is a generic, but they are out of stock and I have a request in to be emailed when they have some in.
