Tires - Stock vs Radial Truck type - 800 ex
« on: February 14, 2023, 10:49:15 AM »
I'm sure this has been discussed at length.......not finding the answer I need.

Very happy with my 800ex, no actual problems - just over 3000 kms.
The one thing I don't like, is when you are driving on decent dirt roads that have some water puddles,
can't seem to drive through them at speed as the water gets plowed ahead and back into my windshield/cab.
Not a great scenario during the winter months with ice on the windshield. Most of our riding group have no issue with this and don't seem half as dirty as my bike is.

Is anyone in the group running radial tires ( or more of a truck tire - Carnivore, Alpha, etc ) ?
Does a truck style tire stop this from happening ?

I was considering the Traxxion Alpa 28's.
Which leads to my next question, can I run the same size tires front/back without changing the rims ?
28x9.5x14 ?

Thanks

I personally don't think the type of tire has much to do with the amount or height of the forward spray you drive through. I believe it has more to do with speed of the vehicle and depth of the water. To keep the spray down you have to adjust the speed...down...from my experience. I run a radial tire but only because it gives me better traction, handling and overall ride. They case the same spray as the bias ply tires going through puddles...at least from my observation.
Running the same size tire on different width rims will cause the overall diameter to be slightly different. People are doing it but know it's hard on the drive train as in 4wd it forces one set to slip slightly to equal the speed of the set at the other end. This not only adds wear to either the front or back, but puts extra load on the differential and/or the rear gearcase...and transmission. Not bad if on soft stuff but pretty bad if on hard pack, rock or pavement where the slipping can't happen easily. My advise- go the extra mile and get a nice set of 7 or 8" wide rims..all the same and get a nice set of 27 or 28x10s to go with them all around. 8-ply radials will be quite a bit heavier but at least you won't be "That Guy"...you know..the one that has tire problems all the time that people have to wait for. One other thing to consider is that CFM has been known to save materials..they make their wheels thinner so they need...and use shorter studs. At least they did up to 2018. When putting standard aftermarket wheels on these shorter studs, the lug only catch about half the threads they should so be ready to buy standard length studs to switch out if needed. You may not need to but just be aware.. it's possible.
