Stereo system
« on: August 16, 2017, 01:56:01 PM »
Hey guys just wanted to pick some brains.  I recently installed a head unit and a couple of 6.5" speakers with superatv's speaker housing.  I bugged into the solid red wire off the ignition and made my own ground under the frunk.  The way it works with that set up is, it powers up without the key in the ON position (or the key in it at all) so I have to manually turn the head unit off. When the key is powered to ON and start, it loses power briefly then stays on. Just wondering if anyone did something different like a toggle so the power to the head unit isn't always hot with no key.

I'm going to toss in that it's usually advisable to have an extra accessory powered either off the actual accessory circuit or from a secondary fused accessory circuit panel because..among other things, tapping a power source that wasn't intended to have an additional load hooked to it may cause a voltage drop to the system(s) it supplies power to.. such as the ECU or some other digital controller ..which may.. cause some issue with that system or cause an expensive failure. The "red" wire may be just fine but without knowing I would at least take a look at the wiring diagram to see all it does. If it also powers the accessory circuit then it should be OK.

accessory circuit, I did not know about this.  I'll check the diagram to see where/what I can tie into. Thnx Kawi

There is only one and it runs to the 12Volt plug on the dash. There is two wires to it-one keyed 12V the other is ground. Its fused back at the fuse box at the column on a 15amp(I think) fuse. I have all my extra stuff (except my Hot 12V plug for the GoPro) tied into that...even my light bars. Easy to get to if you take out the storage tray up front. Now it's keyed power so it's off when the key is off.

So basically if i tie into that don't try to run the stereo, light bar, and a spot light all at the same time. I like the idea that its not hot unless the key is on.

I see how that works now looking at the diagram, The red hot wire comes into the ignition and the black runs out of the ignition to the fuse block, then out of the fuse block to various circuits, white/green to red for the hot side of the DC Outlet. The '15 800 wiring diagram shows a 10 amp fuse for the DC Outlet/Audio/GPS circuit.

Maybe it is a 10 amp. As long as you don't exceed that you are fine. If you will be needing more them that, probably better to run a second fused accessory circuit straight from the battery...and maybe use a 20amp relay to power it triggered off the OE accessory circuit. Those relay coils use in the milliamp range power. That way you still have power off when the key is off.

I did the same as nmk and I run my radio and 4 6+9s and light bar all night never have popped a fuse so you should be good. Come to think of it I have also used a 12v air pump in that socket aswell when a buddy got a flat plugged it and broke out the air pump lol

To avoid overloading ANY circuits, use the accessory wire to "trigger" a RELAY for each added accessory...run the power to your lights, stereo ,etc. through fused Battery power at your relays....pin 85 (acc power)....pin 86 (ground)....pin 30 (fused Batt. power)....pin 87 (to your light, heated seats, stereo or etc.) // I have six separate relays neatly attached behind the dr. seat for accessories.
