Rear mounted winch
« on: December 28, 2020, 07:40:35 AM »
Anyone ever consider or actually mounted a winch in the back of a zforce?  I’m looking at a spot that looks almost perfect for it. I took my sway bar out and it leaves a great spot to mount a winch plate and small winch. Only question I’d have is would heat from the muffler be an issue for it?  If you can deal with the body roll taking the sway bar out improves the ride over rough terrain immensely. Seems ok at speed in most cases too. I can think of a handful of times I’d wished for a winch on the opposite end. Thinking I might go for it with a cheap harbor freight deal for now to test it out. Any other experiences would be appreciated.

I've had a movable winch on receivers, on my King Quad for many years and I find that I have used it more often in the rear than in front. (Damn, I'd better fix that sentence!)
Seems that more often I have needed to pull myself out from where I shouldn't have gone, than pull myself even deeper in. :)
I've given a casual look at the Z with an eye to fabbing up a rear facing winch and nothing popped out at the time. I'll keep the idea fresh though.

I’m still considering options as well. I’m thinking now that there just isn’t sufficient space where the sway bar use to live. Muffler would be so close it would get to hot I think. I’ve seen some mounts from iron Baltic that mount about where the license plate goes but then the winch is exposed. I think I’ve been bored lately and started to many projects. Should probably just finish a few up before starting this one. I’ll keep looking at it though and post if I come up with an idea I like.

So I ended up getting the portable marine winch from harbor freight. It has an adaptor plate that slips onto a trailer ball. I decided to trim the plastics below the license plate mount to open up the cross bar on the frame and I mount a shackle there that uses that adaptor plate since the hitch, A probably wont have a ball mount in it when on a trip and B even if it did if I'm buried to where I need to retreat backwards there's a good chance it'll be submerged. Tried it out in the yard as a test and seems to work pretty good. I'll need to come up with a decent way to hook up power when needed but in a pinch it'll work. The winch is just barely strong enough probably but I can use a snatch block if not too. The other reason I decided to try this route is I can toss it up front if that winch fails or somewhere on the roll cage if and when I go over or just need to stabilize to prevent rolling over. My biggest gripe at this point is this winch does not have reverse. Did not check for that when I ordered it. guess its not a deal breaker but it would be nice to have that as well as manually pulling the cable out. Oh well.

Does anyone know if the Iron Baltic rear winch mount will fit the 800 trail? Says 800ex in the ad. Are the frames the same? thx.

The basic frame is the same. What's different is the a-arms.

Here's what I did. I don't weld, so I made up a bracket and bolted it together. Put the relay behind the drivers seat, and the control on the drivers hand grab. Haven't tried it yet as I'm in the middle of doing mods.
