Parasitic Draw 800 ex
« on: May 28, 2021, 08:12:05 AM »
Hey Guys,

Thought I would run this by the group see if anyone has some ideas. I have a 2015 Zforce and after about 3 days the battery will not start the vehicle. It has been replaced, and seems healthy.

Troubleshooting it , I hooked up my amp meter in line with the negative terminal. After pulling each fuse the draw never went below 1.2 milliamps. However if I unhook the harness in the picture amperage drops to 0. Additionally one of the wires from this harness the gray/black wire is pulled out of the back of the connector, does anyone have a wiring diagram they could share?

Thank you!
Welcome. They all have some parasitic draw...mostly from the clock and pod sets and I find it interesting that they are not all the same..but where some take a month to pull down a battery and some take 3 months...none I know of takes only a few days like yours. Something else is up. Check the winch controller's controller's usage. Some contacts have failed and gotten water inside and cause what looks like a massive parasitic draw.

Could someone with a Z800 perform a draw test on their bike and let me know what values they are getting?

Disconnect the negative terminal, attach one end of your meter to the battery with the other lead connect it to your cables with the ignition off what value do you see?

Pretty good explanation here. https://www.wikihow.com/Find-a-Parasitic-Battery-Drain

And because some of us have several negative leads to the battery like the winch ground and me with some special devices, test all of them this way. If I get the chance I'll do mine.

After thinking about this some more. My current battery is 31ah, and with a 1.2milliamp hour draw according to online calculators should last almost 2 years. Maybe the amp draw issue isnt an actual problem? I am thinking about buying https://www.amazon.com/Yuasa-YUAM6230X-YIX30L-BS-Battery/dp/B0022XTZO0 as a replacement battery. See any problems with this logic?

I was going to say as fast as it goes down there has to be more on or...the battery has a problem. Maybe pull it and have it load-tested first. Otherwise it acts like there's something on like a light, sound amp...something.

The replaced battery I got from a friend who I thought mentioned it was only like a year old. However after talking with him some more apparently the battery could be 3 years old he doesnt really remember :/ . So far since it was off the charger last night the old battery has lost .1 volts just sitting.

My new battery is sitting at 12.9 volts atm, going to check it again in 12 hours see where it is after being in the machine.

Load test them both...and end the speculation. Gota be an AutoZone or something close by.

Another thing to consider, how was this battery activated for service? It's almost certainly an AGM battery and there are still a surprising number of people INCLUDING SHOPS AND PARTS STAFF who ought to know better, who just squirt the electrolyte in fast and then slap a new battery on a quick charger saying "Come back in an hour and it'll be ready for you". Early in that hour the battery will be ruined. Won't hold a charge.
Any time I buy a battery I insist it be handed over in a sealed box, that has not been meddled with by some bumbling parts man.

You need to allow the electrolyte to drizzle in at its own speed and then charge it for a good 8 hours on a proper low amp smart battery charger or maintainer (not an old stupid one with a '2 - 10 - 50 amp' switch!)
Sounds like this battery might have been cooked.

You're right, that tiny draw shouldn't bother a healthy charged battery. I have left my 800 battery alone all winter 3 times now, no battery maintainer, not removed and stored in a warm garage, nothing, and each time in the spring the SXS spins over like a sewing machine.  :) The static draw is minimal.
