Unless he also cut-in a hood scoop or holes in the tray, it wouldn't get enough air.

Seems like a lot of extra work to me too.

Seems like a proper place for it but many unknowns. I'll keep digging for more info.

Ya thanks. I'd still be interested in the whole picture if nothing else just for curiosity.

Having it get it from the front is a good idea and some with other makes pipe it to the side of the radiator to get the coolest...and least dusty air from there...like many vehicles do. They also just leave the filter in the box and just plumb 2.25-2.5" flex from the box through the center tunnel and out where the radiator lines come to the front. It's a cleaner system then I or many others have...I just couldn't see how to get the proper size tubing through there. Looks like it needs some pro to make some ducting for it...IMO.

Not many pictures of it. Would have to be tough tubing.

I really don't want to go through the box. Just playing around with this idea. Maybe a 3 inch fan up front. Used 2 inch pipe. Had to adjust my seat by about an inch and a half. Sorry about the pic being sideways.

I would suggest going up in size as soon as you can, or split it into two pipes of the same diameter. The reason being all of those bends will cause a lot of restrictions in air flow. From a venting perspective, a 90* elbow is about the same as 5 feet of pipe, a 45* is 2 1/2' and so on.
Wow, these things are FUN!!!

I took a page from glenlivets book and made a more permanent mod to the intake using aluminum so it only draws from the cabin.  It is now totally isolate to pick up from the cabin.  I also upgraded to the Uni filter.  Even well oiled I still noticed very fine dust in the intake after a bunch of miles in a very fine dust area.  I don't think you'll ever eliminate all of the dust.

I put a little coating of air filter oil in the intake tube to monitor intrusion by swabbing it during filter cleanings and looking at it under my digital microscope. I found using either Maxima FAB-1 or Bel-Ray foam filter oils did stop 99.9% of it...and running two Unifilters stopped all of it...at least enough of it I can't find any when swabbing the intake track just after the air box filter.

I saw one day, that my intake sock filter had sucked up against the intake plenum hole and it was only filtering air through that one circle of the mesh bag, on the back side. I added several holes in the plenum to reduce velocity and restriction. Swiss Cheese'd the sucker.
There's no reason the intake should all come from one hole, especially one on the side opposite the cab grill!

That and drawing from the grill/cab only, it breathes a bit easier.

That will be my next change, I agree the one hole is pretty lame.  I am already banding the sock around the intake to minimize dirt intrusion through all of the gaps.  I'll probably buy another intake to modify so I can switch back if I need warranty work.  I can see them rejecting my claim because I added some holes to the intake.

I added a better picture of the pizza box inspired mod too.  The grill enclosure has a foam seal that seals against the bottom plate.

I noticed there is a little molded-in bar, one on either side of the plenum end (see my close-up pic above) and I wondered if these might be to locate the elastic base on the bag so that it makes a seal all the way round and doesn't slip down and leave a couple of gaps at the bolt and bracket, (in which case I made a hole too many.)  :)

That would seem to make sense, but the service manual doesn't even show a drag-on bag. The only reference to servicing the air intake that I could find is the diagram on 06-2 and it doesn't even show a pre-filter bag at all, just a bare pipe and plenum end!
Besides, when mine was delivered the bag was pulled down as far as it would go, over top the bolt and bracket leaving the triangular shape gaps. Did CF Moto just forget to tell users and dealership mechanics how they intended the intake to be assembled/serviced? If the bars are meant to locate the elastic then why aren't they in the form of close set upper and lower pairs so that the elastic band would stay located in place, between them?

Love the machine, baffled by the thought behind the factory air intake system.  8)

What also baffles me is that to date, they have made no change in design to that system at all on this model...knowing all the issues and the bosting they do about makes changes to overcome problems right on the line. This is one that never was important enough to address I guess. Just a plastic box insert and a slight end change would have been all it would take.
