Front Diff went out.
« on: March 02, 2017, 08:08:32 AM »
Well last week was a sad day for the 800 ex.  I climbed up a ditch, that my son's Big Wheels truck could have made it through with no problems, only to hear a clunk out of the front end which i reached the top.  I was hoping it was possibly a broken axle but I just heard from the dealer that the whole front diff is shot.

Does anyone have an idea of what the front diffs go for price wise?

I have been impressed up to this point with my ZForce, but a front diff going out the way it did with under a 1000 miles is starting to change my mind.

I think your dealer needs to tell you exactly what actually happened so you can deduce why. I've seen these things take way more then they should ...and because of an operator, break quite quickly. For instance there is a video here of a guy climbing in 4wd but not with the diff locked that at one point the front wheels are off the ground and spin wildly, then one wheel is slammed down on the ground stopping it while the other wheel is off the ground. That..took his diff out. The operator was the cause of that one as any UTV diff would have failed under those conditions. So...it's important to know what actually happened inside. Could also be that it just broke a plastic part on the actuator and your dealer just wants to replace the hole thing. Just never know.

Cfmoto dealers can purchase each and every pcs in the diff individually. The diff might be blown, but it may only be a cheap pcs also. So hard to say price I've rebuilt 8g9 diffs and only 1 complete explosion. Most are the spider gears. They are very soft and sloppy.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

Ask for the old diff back. Keep it for a spare. You can get the needed parts online and rebuild it  cheap.

I called back today and asked for an explanation of what happened to it.  Never got a phone call back.  Going to try again in the morning.  Really interested to hear what they say after reading your posts!

When and if you decide to rebuild that front diff, take your time and find some shims that fit on the back side of the spider gears. Shim until you rid the spiders of all the slop within the carrier. This will provide more tooth engagement, and likely make for a much stronger unit.

I have never had one apart so I will more than likely have someone else take a look at it.  Just got off the phone with the dealer. They did not take it apart.  They said they could just tell that it was "really bad".  and as I was writing this post, they called again and said that the test drive they did after installing new diff still had the "clunking" sound.  Just my luck.  Calling me back later today.  I have a good feeling that my $900 repair is about to be increased.

Wow..wasn't even the diff after all. Probably a CV joint... somewhere.

Sounds like you have a dealer that is only good at selling things and not fixing them.  I would RUN from them as quick as possible.
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

Still haven't heard anything which can't be a good sign.  And yes, if they find that it is a CV joint or something else making the noise, who knows if I even needed the new diff seeing how they didn't even take it apart to check.  This deal is going south...fast!  My 800 has been in the shop twice and both times, there have been issues.  Unfortunatly, there is no other dealer close by.  Looks like the 800 is going up for sale once everything is up and running.

I'd call or email Cfmoto directly. They may have to get involved with that dealer.  Can't really blame the buggy. Sounds like that dealer didn't do very good prep work to begin with.

Ouch, you need to find another dealer, sounds like a repeating echo.
Well atleast it doesn't have a bonfire recall on it.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

So they tell me know that the noise is coming from a front A arm bushing that is bad which should be a simple fix.  However, they still say that my front diff is bad.  They offered me $250 off for the new diff.  I asked them about fixing the original and they said they felt by the time they replaced parts in the original, they would be close to cost of new.  However, they still have yet to take it apart.  They said it will roll though without fixing it.  And to top it off...they found play in my steering.  Not a safety issue so I probably won't touch that for now.  Want $1500 to fix all three.

Just thought the A arm was interesting seeing how Z hasn't been abused like some of the other machines I ride with.

I'm sorry..but sounds like more BS to me. This is why its better to do these things yourself. That way...you know.
