EFI diagnostic capabilities and OBD compliance
« on: November 04, 2018, 11:46:40 AM »
I was intrigued to read that the Z1000 is OBD-II compliant which any modern ECU/EFI should be. That lead me to believe that the older machines should also have the bits available, if not an actual OBD-II hook-up.

Having read the service and wiring manuals, I thought I would experiment with the diagnostic port on the Z800. This is a three wire connector for the K-line (ISO 9141) diagnostic signal. I built an OBD-II cable to pass through the K-line signal from the DIAG port by the steering wheel, and I connected that to the OBD-II reader. While the reader tried to find a matching communications protocol, it ultimately failed to do so.

I went back to the wiring diagram and found the harness also provides a two pin CAN connector with CAN High and LOW signals ( ECU connector J1 - pins 7 & 8 ). This is a more modern protocol than the K-line.

I'd like to wire the CAN connector into the OBD harness as well.

The big question is: Does anyone know where I can find the CAN connector on a 2017 Z800?

The diag connector is located to the right of the steering column. Your model year likely has plastic cladding covering that area (covering eps motor/steering column). There are NOT two diag connectors for the ecu. There is one for the ECU and a separate one for the power steering controller.

If I understand correctly you have identified pin 1&7 as the can bus to/from the ECU & the wiring diagram showing the pair with a connector not going anywhere.

Should this be correct please advise the wire colors & will have a look where I remember some none terminated connectors.

ECU connector J1, pins 7 and 8 are the CAN lines. They are Black (low) and Blue (high).

Somewhere on the machine should be a two pin female connector with Black and Blue wires to it.

"The diag connector is located to the right of the steering column."

Yes. That is the K-line bi-directional diag connector. Three wires from the J2 connector; Power (Brown/Blue), Ground (Green), and K (Orange). The connector is found on the harness by the steering column.

"There are NOT two diag connectors for the ecu."

According to the wiring diagram, there is a K-line connector (J2), and a CAN connector (J1), so I expect to find the CAN connector somewhere on the harness.

I will have look tomorrow, I've a 2017 that isn't caked in shit  :) The factory PDA does have an adapter to connect OBD II for the newer ECU's. It only reads line by line in real time, no data log or graph capabilities.

if you follow the K line plug wires, the CAN connectors comes out of the harness at the same spot. I doubt the ECU supports it though.

I wish that were true for my Z, but no other connectors are coming out of the harness at the steering column.

Had a look...quickly & could not find.

Have you looked @ the ECU connector to be sure the wires are actually there?

I found it!  :o

It's tucked up under the dash. Had to remove the cover under the dash and pull down the wiring.

Now I have to find the proper connector mate for it and wire it up to the OBD plug.
That will take a while.

I also found another 3 wire connector; 1-Red, 2-Green, 3-Purple.  I can't find this plug in the 2015 wiring diagram, but it matches the color coding for the K-line diag port shown in another post.

Guess I have some more detective work to do.

I wish I had a 2017 wiring diagram to work from.

The red/green/purple is the EPS diag connector

Here is a picture of the CAN plug. I need to find a pigtail for this so I can wire it up to my test harness.

Nice detective work, sounds like that connector must be close to the ECU.
