Antifreeze
« on: April 12, 2021, 08:31:05 AM »
Ok so whats the deal with the cfmoto anifreeze? I see alot of talk about how it sucks and its corrosive blah blah blah. Dealer is claiming its fine, they haven't had issues with it. Whats the real story here? Should I be worried about it and flush it out? And if with what, just any standard global compatible extended life coolant?

Well, a few years back their supplier formulated an anti-freez that under certain conditions would turn to gel. Obviously that wasn't good. Then they switched suppliers or fixed the problem somewhere is 2015. Now sense at least 2014 CFM's water pump mechanical seals have been sub-standard and some shafts were not true..ie bent. Either or both causes the seals to leak and sometimes never stop unless the seal and/or shaft gets replaced. Many...and I say many hundreds of units that started leaking when new stopped when the coolant was replaced. Mine was one of those. This is because the CFM coolant has less water pump lubricant then western coolants...I assume..because it turns out that very water pump lubricant coats not only the rough sub-standard surface of the CFM seal but also fills-in the valleys enough to stop it from leaking by on most...not all..new leaking seals. The change on mine did stop my seal leak for around 800 miles...then it started again...just a little. I added a little extra water pump lube to my coolant and it stopped again. That was almost 900 miles ago. So far so good.

So the new(er) coolant itself is OK but probably weak on some additives and I suspect pump lube isn't the only one. Changing it is probably a good idea but I wouldn't make it a priority. If your seal is weeping/leaking a little might bump it up a little.
