air intake system
« on: May 20, 2019, 10:06:29 AM »
Hi   Has anyone installed a Particle Separator on the air intake system of there Z800, they claim it can add more power and also eject 94% of dust. I talked to the Rep. at SBFILTERS.COM this is what he had to say.
All of the UTV Particle Separators have the same capacity and it's plenty to support that 800cc engine. The mounting and ducting is what's different, and is vehicle specific. We don't make a kit for a CFMoto, but you're welcome to buy a kit and adapt it to fit. Usually people figure out which way they want the clean air to exit, driver, center, or passenger.
There are guys in my utv club that have installed them of course they have Polaris machines they claim cuts filter changes by half or better.
Here is the web page look under Particle Separator then UTV.      https://www.sbfilters.com/particle-separator/polaris-rzr-900-76-2002

Yeah...they work...and that's probably my next mod. I am going to get the one for the YXZ which has a 3.5" center discharge and use a long sweep "Y" or "T" to flow into both of my stacks from the center...

Thanks for the reply NMK, After my last run in the Idaho foot hills my filter was so dirty I figure My power was decreased by 25% or more and I had to end my ride before complete air starvation and possible damage. So rather then chance that again Mod. the system with a Particle Separator and extend engine life, $400. is a lot cheaper than a new engine. Not sure which version I will purchase need to investigate my options and go from there. Again thanks for the input.

A friend has one on his Ranger. Said he now only has to change the air filter once a year now where it was monthly...or more.

I installed one about a month ago. I also connected the CVT to the unit. Went to Kanab Utah for the dust, only problem no dust rained all week. The air temperature on the CVT never went higher than 140 degrees, I have a 3" pre-filter in a 4" canister that takes care of the CVT and intake air. I experienced absolutely no power problems. The riding is heavy fine sand with lots of long steep hills, rock climbing, river crossings. one trail had 17 river crossings 18" to 24" of swift water. Fun. I want to think NMKawierider for all his videos, pictures and instructions with out them this would have never happened.

Hi NMK I checked out all the particle Separators and the YXZ seems to be the best option for the Z800 so I ordered it and should have it by 5 June.  Will let you know how the install goes, I realize it will take some Modification but will be worth it.

I'm in Meridian and do the same trails with the same dust problem.  I am almost done with my interpretation of the NMK filter system.  Took a while cause I didn't use the silicon tubing or the aluminum tubing; it's all 3 in black PVC.  I'll post pics soon here and in the how to section.  If you got yours from Birds of Prey, great dealer, bad air intake mod.

Hi there cr2crf from Meridian, Yes I bought my 800 from Birds of Prey I agree air intake sucks.  I'm installing a Particle Separator From S&B should been done soon going to proof test on one of dirtiest runs "Around Arrow Rock Dam" and then check the results and post them on the forum. One thing I have found and I think NMK made a comment on the air box seal is not that great and I agree with him. I ordered a new
rubber gasket and spring clips from Alpha sports what a difference in the way it feels going on. I like a lot of other people thought these parts would last the machines life "Wrong" Well hope your air intake works out.

I also have a bunch of this extra RIM grease left-over and found it works well on that seal. It's just kind of extra stiff so I'l sure there are other products out there that would work just as well.

Thanks for the reply on the grease, going to pick up a tube. Anything that helps to keep the dust from entering the intake is worth a try.

Although I use it all around I only had trouble with the seal leaking down on that lower right corner on the bottom side. The grease did stop that.

Hi NMK the reason I changed my rubber gasket and spring clips, I have removed the air box cover so many times to check the filter condition because of the dust. The spring clips were going on so easy that most of the tension was gone, not sure if it was the rubber gasket or the clips but went ahead and changed both and for some extra insurance I will use the grease. What is really troubling to me is CF MOTO could step up there game by installing a great air system adding a few hundred to the cost and end the headaches and cost that we all go through modifying the exiting one.  Have a great day

Yeah..with all the issues regarding engine air intake you would think they would make some changes. BTW, I have been able to increase the clip pressure by taking a couple of needle-noise pliers and adding some extra arch to them.
