Air inlet mod
« on: August 26, 2020, 09:58:28 PM »
Inspired by our fearless leader NMK, I took this project on early this year before the season.  I decided to try and keep this as simple as possible and hope for the best results.  I don't ride in deep water, so the goal was just to get the intake out of the dusty, hot stock location.

I took the stock black inlet pipe which has a 2" opening and opened that up a bit to accept a 2" threaded PVC fitting, which has a 2" inside diameter.  I had to do some work with the dremel to keep the threaded part from not going into the stock inlet pipe so it would not create a restriction.  Once I had a really nice fit to the point where it would thread on, I added some epoxy and made it permanent.  Cut the hole to go through to the bed with a hole saw and it's nice and snug.  I wanted to use this K&N filter since it was a good, flat product and those mushroom filters I saw on ebay just looked too cheap.  In order to get it to fit, had to get a shop vac adapter and then epoxy it into the white PVC fitting.  Now the filter slides on, and tightens with the clamp.  Easy on/off for cleaning.  This was the filter, 2 1/4" ID.

I've had this on all season, and have ridden a LOT of gravel roads, and for my trip to WV earlier this year.  I've been in some dust.  So, went to clean the filter this week, and this is how the filter looks.  Unbelievable.  Great mod, thanks for the inspiration, NMK!

Looks good. Yeah that's about what I find when I open-up my air box once a year to check mine. Of course people do need to know we still have to clean the first filter.. all the time but...it's sure a lot easier. And having that double-protection for the engine takes that #1 cause for engine loss completely off the table...lol My next mod is going to be the particle separator. Just have to convince my self I want to spend the almost 600 bucks total cost on it. :)

Thanks.  I don't keep the one in the bed oiled.  I just wash it out with water.  I can do that on the trail if need be.

By way of comparison, this is what my filter normally looked like before cleaning.

Yeah I didn't convert my CVT intake can to an oiled Uni because of that very reason. I always need to clean that one after some rides. A quick rinse and its back to the trails...or sometimes I have to stop and tap it out on the trails just to get back to camp.

I oil both of my filters.  The primary, inside of the oem air box I oil both the inside and outside foam, but on the intake end of the snorkel I oil just the inside foam and leave the outside foam sleeve dry.  By doing this my outerwears sock doesn't stick to the filter and I can just shake it out while on the trail, if the need be.  I've not had to clean and re-oil my primary filter in about 500 miles and only had to do the "snorkel filter" once and I don't think it needed it then.  The Outerwears sock gets washed with soap and water each time I get back from a ride.  By the way, my "snorkel filter" is located inside the cab between the driver and passenger above head height.  Hope this helps those who are thinking about snorkeling and the design they may use.

I hadn't thought about only oiling the inside of the first filter. Might try that soon. My real problem is that I ride in so much dust that the CVT filter gets completely blocked in less then 10 miles if road-running and the booster fan only gives me another couple of miles before the belt air temps exceed 210F. I have to stop, pull that can, tap it clear and reassemble. Getting old. The engine side lasts several rides sometimes but the CVT side only lasts a few hours sometimes. It was better when I had the stacks taller but I didn't like the looks. Was thinking about porting them back into the cab but that means cutting into the roof cause of the rear windshield...and not sure I want that noise back in there..worked hard to get it quiet enough in there to talk to the wife. The particle separator is the other option but the cost...dang.

Whether you oil it or not, just getting the intake out of that dusty, hot area in the center console will improve it immensely.  I think you could probably even go without a second filter and still be miles ahead.  I can't believe the difference.

Like you, after I snorkeled, I blocked off a lot of holes into the cab including the old air inlet.  That cleaned up the inside air/dust problem a lot.  I was thinking about snorkeling the CVT, but because "the dust had cleared" and reading that your filter was plugging up quite often, I think I'll just let it be for now.  I haven't road through water deep enough to enter the intake or exhaust and I think the dust into it is minimal, so building mud in their is not likely.  Maybe after this winter, when we get back from Yuma, I'll pull it apart and take a look to see if there has been any ware and tare.  I'm with you, a particle separator is the way to go.  NMK, in lieu of an expensive particle seperator have you looked at either an Enginaire 2-20 or a Donaldson H002437 pre-cleaner, Topspin as a possible inexpensive fix to your CVT filter plugging problem?  They look interesting to me.

Actually I found that the stock intake location works quite well, as long as it's been modified by boxing in the area behind the grill so that the motor HAS to breathe only through that grill. No motor or tire air permitted, only air just like you are breathing.  The UNI only collects about 1/20th the dust compared to what it did.

A few others have done this now, I've seen pics on other CFM forums.

Well after all it WAS made at Lizzy n Charlies campsite in Utah, out of a scrounged pizza box and some duct tape.  That's kind of hillbilly. :D

Yeah if it can only get air from the cab and no where else, it's an amazing difference. Even after all I have done with these stacks, after lowering them so that don't look so funky, they still get an awful amount of dust in a very short time. I can look back there going down a road..even all by my self and it's so dusty behind the rear windshield I can't even see my storage box...yet its just fine in the cab. I'm thinking as a prelude to the particle separator, "Y"ing them together and porting it back into the upper cab area.
