4x4 noise
« on: September 29, 2016, 07:16:33 PM »
Tell me what you all think. running in 4 wheel drive you can hear a real rough sound that sounds like its coming from the front end. So I took it up to the dealer where I got it from, at first the guy was like that's your gears in the front end. well after a hour or so he came and got me and said it also make the sound in 2 wheel drive just not as bad. said it must be the clutch and putting it in 4 wheel drive just puts more pressure on the clutch making it louder... now does this sound about right. the guy was new and never even worked on a cfmoto.   I plan on fixing it myself but want to make sure Im going in the right direction. !

First..what machine are we talking about? Second...no, the pressure on the clutch doesn't change between 2 and 4wd other then when what extra traction does with torque. Now the pressure in the front drive parts does. A few with the Zs and the Us have had carrier bearings go out. Some have had gear problems in the differential and others have had engagement issues with the actuator. You may also fine a problem with one of the CV joints. I guess what I am saying is look to the front end first.

I've got a 2015 cfmoto 800ex.. he had it off the ground and was running it, and to me the sound seemed like it wasn't in the front, but more towards the motor on the right side. I was slightly upset with it all and didn't ask the guy more question because he said my warranty wouldn't cover it and it runs our oct 3

Why wouldn't your warranty cover it! It should! It has for everyone else.

told me it had to be fixed by oct 3 and they had no parts in house everything had to be ordered and he couldn't fix it by then... but also the 4x4 drive still pulls and works good. just a strong noise. and isn't the clutch on the left side? when I told him I just fix it myself he pointed to the right side of the motor and told me to take this cover off and this and that.. Im no great mechanic I just know enough to feel my way though it so im a little lost

Don't let that dealer bullshit you!  The fact that they don't stock the parts has no bearing on warranty.  You notified him of the issue before your warranty expired, it's his obligation to take care of it.

If it makes a great noise towards the front of the engine than it might be the gear right at the front output shaft. Where can am has a solid through shaft for the front and rear outputs, cfmoto uses a two peice design. The gear is shimmed just like the diffs to mesh right. Might be out a little bit causing the whining.

This gear On the output shaft, Is it something that as to be replaced. Bc I can deal with just the noise. Or is it something that I might be 5 miles down a trail and it break?  But I do plan on contacting Cfmoto about this whole ordeal... I tired for 3 weeks getting it into another place and all they would tell me was they call me back. Never did so I drove a little father to another dealer.

after tearing some of down today I have notice my carrier bearing if horrible bad. So im hoping that is it... and btw having your yr 6 old hit the gas while you have it jacked up and your under it to listen for noise is very very sketchy..

I don't know how many times I have had to yell at the kids for messing with the jack or jumping on what ever I am under. There were some posts on the bearings here. I don't remember if they ever gave the sizes or part numbers for them though.

Do you mean the support bearing in the centre of the driveshaft, driving the front axle ? Mine has a lot of free movement

If someone can get them out and measure them, we can find some good replacement bearings with seals that might last.
