2017 Z800 trail Drive belt
« on: September 09, 2023, 01:28:43 PM »
Hi have been a member for a number of years. I own a 2017 Z800 trail wet clutch. I drive in dust a lot and forest roads, I am going to change the drive belt but the OEM is some what on the high side of pricing, cheapest I have found is 229.00 I guess my question is has anyone found a belt that is as good or better than the OEM, I have read many have installed cheaper belts but they don't last. So if anyone has found a reliable belt let me know and thanks for any replies.

Thanks NMK for the info but I was also looking for some input from the members  Good or Bad  with there experience with the belts you mentioned, so I could make an informed decision on which belt would be best.  Again Thanks

Of the three, the Ultimax or the EPI are the top rated. However as much as I hate to say it, as it is with all other manufacturers, the OE belts are the best. If it were me though...and soon it will be as I still have the factory belt on mine, I will be getting one of the two for-mentioned. If Timken hadn't taken-over Carlisle belts Ultimax wouldn't be a consideration because of a poor past experience but.. I trust Timken...and I do have a positive past experience with EPI belts...and all things EPI. As such will always trust them to put out a quality product. Gates...their carbon belts are OK but there has been too many issues reported for me. In all fairness it may be operator-related caused in most cases though.

On my 2020 Z800 Trail I found the rear drive pulley nut cross threaded with the threads almost stripped out and the front drive pulley nut was barely past hand tightened...
I'm sure neither of the  nuts were  torqued to CFMoto specifications.

Any ideas on whether or not this would cause shifting problems?
This is the reason that Carl Malone sold it to me at a reduced price.

I've already orders 2 new nuts for the rear drive pulley. I am lucky that the shaft wasn't damaged...
I also ordered a new ULTIMAX UA UA484 drive belt for it.

Need to define "Shifting Problems" a little more. Of you mean the physical operation of the shifter when running, likely not. More likely there is a problem with the wet clutch or its idling too high due to a IACV problem. But if you mean the CVT operation itself...maybe. As for no damage to the threads on the secondary shaft, not very likely that a cross-threaded steel nut on a steel shaft only effected one set of threads. I would be careful when torquing it the proper 82ftlb. Sense everything is off do a full inspection and cleaning of both clutches.

You can tell the belt was replaced just before it was traded in to Carl Malone. Both clutches are spotless. The threads on the rear spline are okay. I purchased 2 nuts in order to run one on and off a couple of times.

I'm not 100% sure of the shifting problems because I've been repairing it.  The gas pedal cable was out of its slot on the throttle body so it would only idle...

The last owner installed some led lights on the roll cage using the winch wiring and control button... It was the worst wiring job I've ever seen! The wires were twisted together and a non-electrical tape was used that did not stop the wires from coming lose and pulling apart.
The dash would light up but the starter would not turn over.

All of that mess has been rewired back to the original wiring.

I did notice when we were loading it and unloading it it kept jumping into park. But since I've rewired it back to the original wiring it hasn't done that while I've been pushing it around my garage.

I could hear some ticks coming out from the area of the drive belt cover when I finally started it and ran it.
I was expecting to find a worn belt that was some-what shredded but the belt is whole only with grooves worn into the sides of the it.

Is it okay to run the engine without the clutches installed in order to see if the ticks have stopped?

Thanks!

Oh..that's this one. What a mess. Hope you got a good deal on it. Yes, you can run it with the clutches off and or just the belt off but because the primary shaft has it's outer support bearing on the cover, you shouldn't run it with the belt on.

Grooves on the belt? Can you post pics of the clutches and the belt?

It goes to 7.5" so it should be fine. 5.9" is the minimum as I recall.

Thanks for the replies.  I will keep the belt as a backup.

Hopefully when I put it back together and tighten the nuts to specs it will work without any problems.

I installed the primary and secondary clutches with the new belt today & something isn't right.

Both clutches spin all the time and it sounds like something is loose in one of the clutches or the transmission...

Any ideas?
