overheating

any ideas on why the temp guage would come all the way to hot but rad and hoses are cool     motor is not hot

Double check that the coolant is full and you do have flow first. If so then either the temp sensor is faulty or the lead to that sensor has a short..ie has grounded somewhere.

If it has run for a bit the hoses should be pretty warm. If not you might have a flow problem.
